If you are under 50, not married to a Thai, not going to work or go to school here, or otherwise don't qualify, the chances of getting a non immigrant "O" visa in the US is slim. I was in the same situation prior to getting married recently and was refused an "O" visa in Houston,. I understand that places such as Hull are fairly easy to obtain the "O" visa but if I remember right your from the US and going to England is not very practical. If you want to stay longer then 30 days your best bet is a tourist visa and you can obtain them from the nearest Thai Consulate to your home in the US, prior to coming to Thailand. A single entry tourist visa is good for 60 days and you can get a multiple entry (3 entries) good for 180 days. In most cases you can extend each entry for an additional 30 days to get 90 days for single entry or 270 days for a multiple entry. If after arriving on a 30 day Visa On Arrival you decide to stay longer, you can get tourist visas at the consulates in the neighboring countries but I believe you will be restricted to a single entry. If you know you want to stay longer, it is best to plan ahead and get the multi entry tourist visa.
