Tourist cancel rooms Red Rally

Postby bumper » May 19, 2011, 1:43 pm

This is a bit surprising to me. I wonder if they expect a repeat. Keeping a few in Jail instead of letting register for the election, just might triggers something. But I don't think so now it would be the worse thing they could do for the election. I don't usually even follow politics, but as an investor I need to. Per Kem Eng we should be in a honey moon period. that doesn't seem to be happening as far as the market is concerned. The other half of that they are looking for a huge fall and thin gs to level off in the last quarter of the year.

Why do they anticipate a fall after the election, simple in the end nothing will change. Who ever looses will be protesting I'm glad I don't hold any Hotel stock they got hit hard.

Tourists cancel rooms, flee red rally

Online news:

Tourists have cancelled reservations for about 1,100 rooms at hotels in the Ratchaprasong area ahead of the gathering of the red-shirts this afternoon, Chai Sivikorn, chairman Ratchaprasong Business Operators Association, said on Thursday.

“The loss in revenue as a result of the hotel rooms cancellation is estimated at 5.18 million baht.

"Events planned to be held in Ratchaprasong area today were also cancelled, which will cost businesses about 1.74 million baht,” he said. Total business losses for the day were estimated at 6.92 million baht.

Mr Chai said the business operators at Ratchaprasong area had ordered staff and employees to stop working before 4pm, before the traffic congestion expected to be caused by the red-shirt rally starts to peak.

Some firms told employees to work only half a day today, he added.

The United front for Democracy against Dictatorship was to begin gathering at Ratchaprasong intersection from noon to mark the first anniversary since the crackdown by government forces on red-shirt supporters on May 19, 2010.

UDD chairwoman Thida Thavornseth yesterday gave an assurance the rally will be peaceful and the red-shirts will disperse about midnight.

Tourist cancel rooms Red Rally

Postby FrazeeDK » May 20, 2011, 5:48 pm

first, don't believe everything you read.. 1,100 reservations cancelled?? When the English language newspapers had very little coverage of the ramp up to yesterday's Rajaprasong rally?? How would prospective tourists know?? You can bet the hotels weren't saying, "don't come the 19th of May as the UDD will be here!"

2nd, don't believe everything you read.. BKK Post story on the rally said "20,000" Red Shirts were there.. I'd say that number was far exceeded when I walked through the area (on the Sky Bridge) between 1745-1820 yesterday.. The highest count would have been after 1830 when the common folk had time to get from work to Rajaprasong. Reality probably was 50-60,000 with the UDD claiming double or more of that... It was peaceful and broke up around 2300 Thursday night...
