Tourist visa for Europe (Germany)

Hi guys,
A friend has asked if any "forumites" have been through the process of getting a German Visa for their Thai girlfriend to holiday in Germany. If so, are the many stories of applications being turned down with no explanation true, or perhaps, just a case of people not filling out the paperwork correctly. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am in Germany now with my wife on a 5 year visa, but 2 years ago we went through the process of getting a holiday visa.
The application was relatively easy.

A German national has to get a certificate from his local Rathaus or Foriegner Office that confirms his or her ability to recieve and pay for a foriegn guest. That done its just a case of downloading the Schengen Visa forms and submitting them together with the certificate.

I always put together a package to take to Embassies which included covering letter, bank statements, copies of passport etc and never had a problem with UK, Dutch or German Embassies and always got a fast response.
