Tourists to Thailand limited to 20,000 dollars in cash.

BANGKOK (Thomson Financial) - Visitors to Thailand will not be allowed to bring in any more than 20,000 dollars under new rules expected to take effect next month, officials said Thursday.

The restriction is part of a measure Deputy Finance Minister Sommai Pasri said was necessary to help prevent money laundering and terrorism.

'Previously we have not controlled the amount of money that can be brought in and out of the country,' Finance Ministry spokesman Somchai Sujjapongse said.

'There was a recommendation to limit the amount to 15,000 dollars, but we have decided to limit it to 20,000 dollars,' he told Agence France-Presse.

A finance ministry official earlier said 20,000 dollars 'is suitable for personal spending by tourists.'

The new regulation is expected to take effect in mid-January, he added.

Sommai told reporters Thursday that the measure was being made 'in order to fight terrorism and money laundering.'

I wonder if they mean in cash through customs?,it would have to be. We have a similar law in Australia you cannot carry in more that $10000AUD on your person through customs.

If you are from any EU country you are limited to 10,000 Euros (or the equivalent in any other currency) when you leave the EU. So no effect to any EU visitor.

Most countries have some sort of limit as to how much one can take out. This is the first time I've seen a limit on how much one can bring in. Odd. But then we've become accustomed to odd things from the "caretaker" government.

Not quite correct, travellers to and from the EU have to make a declaration to the custom authorities if they are carrying more than 10,000 EUR (or equivalent), custom authorities are empowered to "detain cash that has not been declared".

Detailed info on EU Cash Controls can be found here: NB - Just because you may be allowed to carry a sum of cash out of one country does not mean that you won't be in breach of the currency rules of the country you arrive in.

When returning to the USA, citizens are only allowed $10,000 USD thru customs. That is a question on the declaration form you must sign. I do not know if that pertains to visitors to the USA. Anyone know the answer?

I have the Australian Cross Border Movement-Physical Currency $10,000 or more form CBM-PC(C)-Form53 (Dec2006) in front of me now.
It states, Complete this form if you are carrying Australian or Foreign currency that is not less than AUD $10,000 in value. Currency is defined as the coin and paper money of a country and does not include travellers cheques/other monetary instruments.

I have declared AUD$ 12,000 cash plus 20,000 cash Thai Baht without any problems.
