travel insurance for seniors

Postby rick » October 4, 2009, 8:00 am

Recently, a poster complained about not being able to get travel insurance for more than 31 days, maybe because they were over 60. Well, you are obviously with the wrong company! following facts were taken from:

http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travelinsurance

This applies to starting from UK. Just do a search for your relevent info, should get 50 or so offers.

These below are for Annual multitrip, worldwide (maybe not USA). Not bothering with only 30 days.

Last minute travel - 45 days per trip - cover up to 75 (higher excesses for some cover as you get older) - £98.45

Preferential travel - 60 days per trip - cover up to 75 (but may be more conditions) - £109.95

Getmy travel insurance - 90 days per trip -cover up to age 85! (higher excesses with increasing age) - £137

American express travel insurance - 120 days - could not find age limits? - £273.60

Columbus direct worldwide - long stay 1 year - age uncertain but possibly 70 - £231.39

These policies have various limits but only cover emergency treatment, cannot use for routine dentistry for example. But are reasonably suitable for those on long stay but who return annually to UK. Maybe you can get cover for more than 1 year, haven't looked. If you are under 65, can get these policies cheaper.

I intend to use long stay policies when i 'move' as will fit in with returning annually to visit family and get new annual multitrip visa. I am sure similar offers are available most expats countries.

Just to add, the longest period i have found for travel insurance is 18 months and up to age 79. So i think most 'visitors' can find insurance to cover them.

If you are genuinely resident in Udon then you really do have to make other health arrangements. Not my area of knowledge and some threads already on here.

Some credit and charge cards actually have good travel policies but you need to be aware of their various conditions, limitations, exclusions and excesses before deciding whether they are suitable for your purpose.

So, before buying additional insurance, check what your cards already provide – you may be pleasantly surprised.

I used to have a separate travel insurane policy but dropped it in favour of using the card insurance facility some years ago - since then I have had occasion to make two claims (one for delayed luggage and one for a medical emergency including an overnight hospital stay) both were paid in full.

Some examples where you may not necessarily be covered with some cards:
    1. If you don’t book your flight on the card.
    2. Your trip exceeds a certain number of days.
    3. You are over a certain age.
    4. Family members (other than the card holder) may not be included.
    5. Pre-existing medical conditions.
    6. Dangerous sports.
Generally speaking, to be able to reclaim expenses through the card insurance policy, those expenses need to have been made on the card.
