True vision HD box- a con or not?

Postby Shado » December 18, 2011, 8:43 pm

My remote (model RC-H101) has a button marked TV/RADIO at the top left corner. Pushing it changes from the TV channels to Radio channels (mostly music). If you have a different model I'm not sure about the button.

Does anyone know if this button has a function? I was hoping it'd turn on my TV, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The new box is a Samsung, if you have a Samsung TV, as we do, then you can use this button to put the TV into standby. The Techie told me it's not compatible with other makes of TV.

True vision HD box- a con or not?

Postby Brian Davis » December 29, 2011, 1:52 pm

My wife's sister, also married to a farang, received several calls yesterday from an 'installer' wanting to change the box.
The sister does not even have a television immediately capable of receiving HD(although there is apparently an adapter available).
The guy kept on about wanting 300 baht petrol money. The sister/husband do not use Udonmap, so I was able to tell them what I understood from the posts. Whatever financial arrangements there might be between Truevisions itself and these franchises, if that's how it works, it just seems clear to me that they try to get tips/gas money, particularly from those unaware of the true picture (excuse pun).
Anyway, sister pointed out that she knew of others, including myself, who had paid nothing, at which point the guy hung up with the comment 'kee nee-oh' - 'sticky s**t'.
Charmed, I'm sure.

True vision HD box- a con or not?

Last night we were not able to use the channel advance control on our new HD box. The only way to change a channel was to enter the actual channel number.....a real pain in the backside when you're scanning channels.
I turned off the power supply, removed the card, turned the power back on and rebooted the box, and all returned back to normal. Glad that worked because I was about to take the box in for a replacement.

True vision HD box- a con or not?

That was often a problem with the early Sky satellite boxes in the UK parrot.
One of the engineers told me that the problem was that static used to build up on the plastic card.
He said the first 'solution' was to take the card out and just carefully wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.
If that didn't work then it was exactly as you did...
They used to recommend leaving the box off for at least one minute if you had to disconnect...

Bob I heard it was down to a sticky, slimy mucus which built up on the card - scientists have only recently identified it as "murdochicous".

We had a problem with an old decoder and after doing some over the phone checks they decided they'd need to change it. Before the Techie left the office they called to say it would cost me 400 bht petrol money which I refused. They said if I didn't agree we wouldn't get a new decoder. OK said I come and remove the system today or I'll take the dish down and throw the lot in the garbage. A Techie turned up 2 hours later with a new decoder and after installing asked for 200 bht, again I refused and he finally went away.
I called True Visions Head Office and they told me they have no real control over how their agents work with their own customers but would look into it and get back to me, no they never did.

Since my last post, two neighbours have had their boxes changed by a different installer to the one insisting on petrol money. No charge.
Bills are remaining at the same total for whatever package you pay for e.g. Platinum or Gold etc. No sign of an increase during the "HD free period". Incidentally, whilst initially told the promotion/free period would be only for 2 months in my case, the office indicated my three channels of HD viewing would remain until the end of April.

True vision HD box- a con or not?

Postby jimboLV » May 21, 2012, 12:00 pm

Speaking of the True Visions tuners, we got our HD box a few months ago. Having read the opening threads I was wary of it all, so I quizzed the guy installing it and he assured me there was no charge if I didn't sign up for HD. He installed it, checked it out and left without me signing anything. Last week we had a notice on the screen that they were "upgrading" the software so we should leave the box on at least standby. Anyway I checked yesterday and our "free" HD channels no longer work, so that must have been the "upgrade".

I've got a 42inch HD Samsung Plasma TV and am well pleased with the picture and sound quality on the standard definition. I could see a very slight improvement on the HD channels, but nothing I would pay anything extra for. Although, as others have mentioned, I can foresee them making some of the premium channels available only with the HD package.

I sure wish they had Direct TV over here like they do in the States.

True vision HD box- a con or not?

Postby Bandung_Dero » May 21, 2012, 3:39 pm

There was a facility on the old top box where one could monitor the signal strength (255 was the best figure) as an aide to aligning the dish. I can't find it on the new decoder and not in the diagnostic menu.

Anyone found it?
