TV3 Farang Mini documtary about Udon village

Postby udonuk1 » July 23, 2010, 1:26 pm

Did anyone else see this mini documentary on TV3 today (in Thai) ? It was about a small village near Udon where there are 100 farangs all married with Thai ladies ? A mixture of nationalities, Germans, Swedish, English were featured. They all seemed happy (of course). I don't speak much Thai , but one of main features of the programme was the health aspect, apparently many of the farangs' blood group is very very rare in Thailand ( ??????? ) , and they had stored away some of their own blood, just in case. The German (maybe he is on here) had a big motorbike, looked like a Harley.

Maybe it will be repeated tonight on news

My wife called me over excitedly to the TV while this was on, only because she recognized a couple of our friends being interviewed. It was all in Thai so I have no idea what they were going on about, but she mentioned something about blood incompatibility between farangs and their Thai wives. She had been told during her pregnancy that she could not breastfeed our baby because of this "incompatibility"! I dismissed it as an old wives tale, so she asked her obstetrician and a couple of the nurses and they said "not a problem", (seems to be the standard response to any questions or concerns). So she went ahead and breastfed our little princess with no problems.

I did a little research (very little) and I think what they are talking about is the fact that very few Thais have Rh negative blood and there could be an incompatibility for this reason. That would explain the stockpiling of blood as it is very hard to find RH negative should you have that condition and require a transfusion. But I still don't understand the breastfeeding issue, as my American Wife had RH negative and she had no problem breastfeeding our two children and I don't remember it ever being a concern.

Anyway that's my take on it. Maybe some other members with some medical knowledge could enlighten us. i would be interested in viewing the program with a translation, just to see what they are saying about us.

.this seems to be the documentary about Non wai they make last year and show earlier on chanel 7, more one year ago. Non wai have the second highest rates of farang in thailand. Must of the people in the program only lives here on short term and some move on to Banphe. There are not so many Expats live for full time in this area but i am one of them living outside Non wai in a small village

JimboLV

The benefits of breast feeding are well documented, antibodies etc being passed to the child etc. Well done .

Blood or blood products ( cells , DNA .... ) as such is not passed via breast feeding. This is all brewed up at the time of the foetus development and remains the same.

I do wonder when they say they store the blood, how is kept, Im presuming at a hospital under quality control issues and then available to expats etc if required. I know occasionaly on this site and others there are urgent requests for some rare blood types.

Im not sure how the Udon Blood Bank thing for expats got off the ground or not, I remember Gunns 123 / Khun Paul was running with it ??? and they struck issues with the corordination of it all.

Was this the one where they were asking for people to partake in about a year ago?

No . That was the BBC doing a radio documentary which never materialised owing to the lack of enthusiastic response . :-"

Just been speaking to the Doctor at Nong Wau Soa Hospital and he confirms this was a new documentary by Channel3 featuring blood donors I haven't seen it myself but understand it has scenes of Ralph and his wife donating blood and also round the school where she works . A German farang farmer at Nong Soon also appears . Maybe a PM to one of them would elicit more information .
