Bangkok will have two international airports

Bangkok will now have two international airports; Suvannabhumi and Don Muang, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Tuesday.

Considering the increasing number of passengers and demands, the Cabinet decided that Don Muang Airport, which was shut down in September after Suvannabhumi was openned, will be re-opened.

He was speaking after chairing the weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday.

"Considering the problems we have now at Suvannabhumi Airport and the number of passengers are increasing, the Cabinet decided that Don Muang Airport will be re-opened and Bangkok will have two international airports."

Sounds like a good plan!

BANGKOK, Feb 6 (TNA) - Thailand's government in its weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday agreed to reopen the former Don Muang airport for both domestic and international flights, making it an additional international airport to supplement the problem-plagued new Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont told reporters after the meeting that the cabinet resolution to let Bangkok have two international airports is to cater for growing number of passengers.

During this time Don Muang airport must be readied as another international airport, the prime minister said, without giving further detail.

The former facility was decommissioned as Bangkok's primary airport in September when Suvarnabhumi was opened with a capacity of 45 passengers a year. But cracks in the new airport's runways and taxiways prompted the Transport Ministry to recommend to reopen Don Muang airport temporarily for non-connecting domestic flights to ease the burden on the new airport.

Transport Minister Thira Haocharoen said the detailed plan to transfer some flights as well as moving facilities back to the old airport will be concluded within two weeks before presenting it for the cabinet's consideration.

Forty-five days after the cabinet's consideration, Don Muang airport is expected to resume operation, the minister said. (TNA)-E009

There's the problem, I saw more than 45 passengers on my last flight alone!

(would also explain the queue for the toilets)

that would be ok if you had a spare hour for the transfer to your conecting flight to udon
sounds to me that to make it safe you need at least 5 hours spare for your connecting flight if the domestic is at don muang.
that sucks

Are both airports really going to be international? Or is Don Muang going to be used as domestic only?

Does anyone know?

Thanks BKKSTAN,
I've been to Don Muang but not the new airport.
Is it pretty easy to just book a flight at these airports to take me onto Udon when I arrive from the UK?

I don't know about how the booking of flights is going to work! You have to realize that the whole process is in transition,so I doubt that things will be as smooth flowing as before.

I don't think anything is past the talking stages yet!Would not surprise me to see all flights eventually transferrred back to Don Muang if the need for repairs is to extensive! If they don't do that, the embarassment and dreams of the new airport being an Asian hub will suffer dramatically IMO.

Now they have the advantage of focusing the blame on Thaksin rather than on the country as a whole. If they string it out for years, the lights might go on around the world of the Thai lack of quality and educated expertise regarding safety issues. That an continuos revealing of the depth of corruption could be diasterous to Thailand with the exception of sexpats mesmorized by the ''girlfriend experience'' =P~

Book online before you leave, either Thai Airways or Nok Air

Nok Air is cheapest

but if you have around 75 kilos in luggage like i did, Nok air will surcharge you anything over 15 kilos per person, so sometimes Thai will work out cheaper. Thai is around the 3000 baht mark, for bkk-udon.They do have some deals sometimes that are cheaper for return ticket.
easy to book your tickets with Thai in Uk before travelling.
