U.S. Ends Combat Presence in Iraq

Postby cookie » August 8, 2010, 5:49 pm

Seven years after trying to find Weapons of Massdestruction,
the U.S. on Saturday handed over all combat duties to Iraqi security forces,
as President Obama’s promised to end U.S. combat operations by the close of August.

=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
let's hope the US and it's allies learned from Iraq
(perhaps this is wishful thinking of my part ;) ;)

Democracy has been spread,
one of the many dictators in the World is gone
a democratic elected government is installed (oh sorry, my mistake, still no government...
Kurds, Sunnis, Shiites, Christians and Jews will join in brotherly love. ;) ;) ;) ;)
the Iraqis are thanking the US and it's allies for all the good work...
the war was payed by Iraq, as promised....
the oil revenue covered the costs of the Iraq war, as promised by Bush, Cheney and co.
the trillions wasted was a good investment....
the human suffer was necessary....
this war was necessary, the results are ok,
mission accomplished, let's start the party...or...never again????????

Iraq forces take over from last U.S. combat brigade

By Serena Chaudhry

ABU GHRAIB | Sat Aug 7, 2010 1:59pm EDT

ABU GHRAIB Iraq (Reuters) - The United States handed over control of all combat duties to Iraqi security forces on Saturday in a further sign its withdrawal is on track despite a political impasse in Iraq and a recent rise in violence.

President Barack Obama said last Monday he would stick to his promise to end U.S. combat operations in Iraq by August 31, with security being left in the hands of Iraq's own U.S.-trained army and police.

"Today is an extremely important day as we continue to progress toward turning over full responsibility to the Iraqi security forces," General Raymond Odierno, top commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, told reporters after a departure ceremony for the last U.S. combat brigade.

Seven years after the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, Washington is reducing the number of troops in Iraq to 50,000 by September 1 from just under 65,000 currently and close to 150,000 during the height of the conflict.

During the ceremony, a division of the Iraqi army demonstrated vehicle checks and other security measures often employed in the war-battered country, where bombings and other attacks remain daily occurrences although overall violence has subsided since the conflict peaked in 2006-7.

While this was the last combat brigade to hand over control to Iraqi forces, there will still be six brigades left in the country after U.S. combat troops leave by the end of the month.

The six Advice and Assist Brigades, which come into effect from September 1 when the U.S. moves formally into an advisory role, will train and support Iraq's army and police.

However, the inability of Iraq's fractious parliamentary parties to come up with a coalition government five months after elections has created a power vacuum potentially vulnerable to sectarian tensions and left many Iraqis concerned about the ability of local forces to maintain security.

There was a sharp rise in deadly attacks in July, increasing fears that insurgents are trying to exploit the political situation to foment sectarian strife.

"The Iraqi security forces have continued to do their job throughout this time and have not been affected at all by the delays in the formation of the government," Odierno said in Abu Ghraib on the western outskirts of Baghdad.

Iraqi Defense Minister Abdel Qader Jassim, who also attended the ceremony, said the issue of politicians struggling to agree on a coalition government was a political one and that the primary responsibility of Iraqi forces was to protect Iraqis.

American forces have been patrolling in a support role with their Iraqi counterparts for months and U.S. commanders say the remaining force of 50,000 at the end of this month will be enough to counter any unexpected surge in violence.

You are a bit confused by geography. The Soviets were not involved in Iraq, and the Taliban are not associated with Iraq either. Try Afghanistan. Or Bkkstan, or NKstan, but not Iraq.

However, you are correct that the Americans want to hightail it out of Iraq as they left Vietnam and Cambodia to their own devices after creating a mess.

Iraq is the new example of the Nixon Doctrine in its purest form.

A stable Iraq will be the linchpin to stability throughout the middle east.
Stability was impossible with Saddam Hussein.
It is much better now.

Iraq still hasn't worked out its ethnic problems and a civil war in the next five years is likely
so it is highly unlikely that we will have a stable Iraq,
let alone that Iraq will bring stability throughout the middle east.

Cookie you have over complicated this. The war is about killing douchbags there are lots of them the more we kill the better we sleep the better we sleep the happier we are. President Obama who I think is a Supream Douchbag also enjoys killing douchbags this part about him I like.

We are going to be killing Douchbags for the foreseable future they will also be trying to kill us because they want us dead. Please get used to it and come to grips with it. This war with douchbags is our future (breathe deeply and repeat if necessary) and please refrain from making such silly posts. :-"

That's because Saddam killed anyone that disagreed with or, criticized him.

In all parts of the world there are only two types of people, the oppressors and the oppressed, as evidenced by the attempted uprising in Thailand. Water always finds its own level and when one oppressor is replaced, as sure as night follows day, another group will rise up and demand that they be annointed as the ruling class and then impose their own form of approved democracy. As the working class/peasants of the world we can only watch as the respective governments of this world engineer involvement in other countries affairs to protect their own ruling class investments at the horrendous cost of human life and suffering.

More likely "they" will be trying to kill "us" because they consider us douchbags - and in the case of Iraq, with some justification.

BTW, what is the current count of dead civilian (non military) douchbags in Iraq? More than 100k from memory - that's an awful lot of collateral damage.

The most important thing Bush, Cheney and the war-hawks realized,
was to create a new Al Qaeda haven in Iraq.
They can be proud and
Bush truly has no remorse for creating the Al Qaeda haven in Iraq.
Perhaps we could try him for aiding the enemy by creating this terrorist haven..... ;) ;) ;)

General Ray Odierno, the commander of American troops in Iraq:

Now, for the vacuum as we see today, again, I remind everyone is that we still have a significant presence here, and we are not going to -- we will not allow undue maligned influence on the Iraqi government as they attempt to form their government. What we're trying to do is provide them the space and time for them to do that, and we will continue to do that post 1 September. We'll still have a significant civilian presence, and again, we'll still have 50,000 troops on the ground here to ensure that this government can be formed by the Iraqis. And that all the other nations respect their sovereignty as they go about forming their government.

this has to be a joke, yes?????
The first one that violated their sovereignty was the US under the command of Bush

general Odierno is saying that we have to respect their sovereignty, or someone could invade, and take over their country for a decade or so, kill their leaders, imprison their people and cause mayhem, installing a gov't that will be far better for themselves than the people there.

Oh, wait... we, the USA just did that didn't we......

Can somebody tell me what the US means by "liberate"??????
I don't quiet get their definition
of liberate.

Over the past seven years, Iraqi insurgents and foreign fighters killed, and continue to kill, far more Iraqis than coalition forces ever did.

But some like to attribute all deaths to coalition forces.

An assertion that is beyond absurd.

I've got an idea, take the Troops out of Iraq and send them straight to Burma :D it would take only a fraction of the time to accomplish, relieve Thailand of a burden, deny China a buffer against India and Free the Burmese People all in one go =D> :D
