Udon Red Shirts

Postby parrot » April 10, 2010, 8:05 pm

I came across this item on Bangkok Pundit's blog (http://www.asiancorrespondent.com/bangkok-pundit-blog)

"Reuters on what is happening upcountry:

About 600 Thai "red shirt" protesters broke into a local government office in the northeast city of Udon Thani, angry at a crackdown on their movement in the capital, local television said."

The only thing that caught my attention while downtown today were the stationing of a police truck and two cops at both of the downtown Bangkok Bank offices. Apparently, they've been watching over the bank for the past month.....since there were threats made against the Bangkok Bank offices in Bangkok.

Does anyone have any info on the Reuter's info above?

Yesterday evening the street that passes the main post office was closed with barricades. Police were forcing drivers to turn right towards Ban Wuay Market or left towards the city shrine. This had happened a couple of days ago, also. I wasn't able to determine if it was just traffic training or some other reason.

Maybe an answer to the above. Late on Thursday night and all through the night Radio 97,5 The Udon red station was broadcasting that the govt was going to close all regional stations supportive to their cause and asking their supporters to flock to the radio station and City Hall to prevent this happening. They insisted that no violence or destruction was to take place . I believe the only damage was to the outside gates at City Hall .Either they were successful or the army changed its mind as they are still broadcasting. :D

The English-language newspapers from Bangkok are reporting that Red Shirts from Udon Thani are doing car-stops at their own road-blocks and searching vehicles at them. Is this actually happening or are they writing press headlines to draw readers? :-k

True Brit, thanks so much for these fascinating reports. You will soon rival Khun Bob Helm and his football reports for interest and well-documented evidence.

Some photos of the Red blockade in Nong Wor Sor. Posted here so not to offend the self appointed moderator KP.

I think these show clearly the peaceful but determined approach of most protesters .

I believe the use of the word "protesters" is these circumstances is somewhat of a misnomer.

If they are conducting themselves as are others at numerous checkpoints ie searching vehicles, "arresting" soldiers/police, etc etc, perhaps "vigilantes" is more appropriate.

Others might call them 'freedom fighters' or 'patriots'. Just depends on where you're standing.

Vigilantes Jack? your not normally so reticent. Must be something to do with the sea air in Cha Am. Why not come completely out the closet and refer to them as terrorists or bandits even .

Trubrit,
My wife and I drove through the area just after the barricades went up. No problem for us....all smiles and waves from both sides.

It seemed like the first two weeks or so of the protests in Bangkok, the who problem was a Bangkok-centered problem. With the latest our of our neck of the woods, Pitsanulok, Korat, Khonkaen, Non-Saat, Nongwahsaw.....it's clear that fixing the problem in Bangkok isn't going to fix the problem in the country.

Protestor: Someone who participates in a public display of group feeling; A person who dissents from some established policy

My words were chosen very carefully Val, in contrast to your above post, and your previous post.

Vigilante: any person who takes the law into his or her own hands.

There were groups of red shirts stopping cars in the Suwan Khuha area on Sunday. They waved me down but I drove straight through.

I guess we are glad to be back in the USA, at this time, and putting up with the murder and mayhem here.
