Udon's most expensive bar

What's the benchmark for cataloging expensive verses cheap bars?

There are those BMs that accused Fuzzy Ken of being an exploitive capitalist and unrepentant money grubber for the 35 baht tax on swaps of Harry's books. Last I heard they were in general agreement on holding a BYOB nightly protest sit-in at Ken's bogs. The hardcore faction were holding out for painting "Free Harry's Books" on their backs and marching starkers through the halls of the mall, finally arriving at Ken's loos.

Myself, I remember FK as a nice guy and good bar manager. You could buy an inexpensive bottle of Jamisons which Ken would label with your name and put on his shelf. You were then set up for a few evenings of cheap drinks, only paying for sodas and ice.

I would definitely agree that FK's prices are low and that he is a nice guy!

Still would like to see prices posted at the bars, as now the Internet cafes have to have prices posted. With the posting of prices in the bars, less ripoffs. I don't go to the bars for 2 particular reasons, I'm married and I hate being bothered by the pesky girls asking for drinks!!!!!!!!!

theres no bar owner ever gonna get rich out of me, i go out drinking about once a month, dont really notice what im paying , its to infrequent to worry about . but if i was a regular drinker , i would certainly stick to the less expensive places, that offer value for money. personally i think the price thing is going to get worse with more bars opening up, how else are they all going to cover thier overheads. theres only so many people with disposable income to spend on entertainment, so the more bars the smaller thier piece of the pie.

Some alcoholics stay away from the bars because they seek to buy at the smallest price possible and they know that they are alkys,but many that can still afford it,drink in bars regularly so they have company of other alkys to help them with denial of a problem!

Totally agree with u saint, we should start a thread that discourages people from buying these new bars, that way the only loosers will be the thai property owners. Once there's a load sat empty for a few years, they'll get the message "we don't need anymore bars", then we the customers can get on with making the most of the bars we have and turn them into nice watering holes (atmosphere & pricing).

Pop-Pop you are spot on, my prices have been displayed from the day I openned and I wouldn't do business any other way.

Believe it or not we the customer set the bench mark for pricing drinks, as long as we're prepared to pay it, they have every right to ask what they like. A bottle of spy costs 27bt, at 100bt a bottle that's approx 250% mark up, cheaky bas***ds!

I definitely agree that bars should have to show their prices. In fact it's mandatory in the UK that all bars and restaurants must display their prices. Restaurants must even have them outside. Then you can establish if they have what you want and at what price.

In LOS I do so dislike going into a bar and before you have even sat down, being asked "You want some drink?" - with no menu or price list presented, and even if you ask, and they understand your question, you get a cursory "no have". There seems to be an automatic presumption that you are a regular here and know what's on offer. If you were a genuine first time tourist you wouldn't know what beers etc were available.

Also, I like to know the prices, because as mentioned above, GF may like Spy, which can be anything between 50 and 150 baht, or a glass of wine, which can be anything from 60 to 200 baht. So it's only fair to be able to assess that in advance of ordering and consuming it!!

The centre of Udon opposite Robinsons looks a mess now that the Farang bars have gone and the Irish clock ? road name,where the new bars are being developed is another mess. Parking is impossible. I can't understand why the area near the Night market /railway station to Posri road hasn't been developed for the replacement bars. Prices for central property has become prohibitive which answers the question. All bars are going to become more expensive as rents increase for properties. Those bars out of the centre paying rents which have not increased significantly should be providing a cheaper prices for food and beer. One Udon bar needs to be a benchmark for all others. The only one where the bargirls dont bother you is the Irish clock. They have a good range of draught and bottled beers at reasonable prices. Why do I suggest this? Go to Bangkok and see what the price of a draught pint is there in the farang bars around Sukhumvit.

IMO prices shown at the bar would definately increase regular local custom for any bar owner, if out on the town late on a heavy session sometimes prices don't seem to matter until you (or worse the wife) opens the empty wallet in the morning..

this one is a tought one.................most bars have menus, i usually ask for one before ordering, if beer not listed......................................i know, it's another tough one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just ask how much, and when put little bill in wood cup on bar, verify.
