That's standard procedure in NK -- for Thai wife extension. Your last 90 days is always cut short in order to provide a few weeks for the paperwork shuffle. Then your first report period is only one month, for you to retrieve your new stamp. So in reality, you're into immigration not four times a year, but six.

Trubrit, I presume it is the norm, went on 19 april for my 90 day, expecting 19 July but was stamped 6 July being the expiry of my visa.Last year they did just that,as you have mentioned, did both at the same time at Nong Khai.Presumably they are trying to be helpful in not making us have to travel twice. 8)

PS I will also decline the funding project if they insist on a marble bathroom with gold taps

I renewed my annual there today the least amount of paperwork I have ever submitted. In and out 45 mins. Missed some copies instead of the yelling and anger I'm used to the guy just copied the other page of my passport that he needed.

I have to say the most professional and pleasant experience I have ever had in renewing my annual

Trubrit, your 90 report does NOT extend past your visa expiration date. You're lucky, I went in one time got 90 days (5 years ago) that extended 60+- days past my type "O" A and questioned it and got some mumbles which I mistakenly took for yes, went back in at the end of 90 days to renew my visa and was told I'd overstayed my visa by approximately 60 days and had to pay 10,000B. I assume that is what you're referring to. When I brought the fact up that the immigration official that did the 90 days had not pointed this out to me the official doing my renewal just smiled at me and said "not much money, you can afford it"! I did say to him "if it's not much money why don't you pay it".

Hi any one, can someone answer my questions:
1. I am a US citizen and is married to a Thai who is a US citizen too, we both retired from the US. How long would we have to stay in Thailand (Udon Thani) before we will be eligible for get a one year retirement visa??
2. If we get a one year retirement visa, can we go back to the US? (6 months here and 6 months there). Or do we lose that priveledge??

Please advise.

I need to give some background.

Last year I got my retirement visa in Phuket because we were living in Phuket at the time. Since then we have moved to Udon and 3 months ago I did my reporting at Nong Khai for the first time. Some minor questioning as to why I was reporting in Nong Khai when my visa was issued in Phuket, but basically no problem after I explained we had moved.

However, on 1st September I went to Nong Khai to renew my retirement visa which is due to expire on 1st October. I had all the right documents (letter from bank, bank book, adequate cash for 3 months etc) but they took one look at the previous years visa issued by Phuket immigration office and told me I had to go back to Phuket and get them to "transfer" the visa to Nong Khai.

I pressed them a bit as to just what Phuket immigration would do and was advised I would fill in a form and Phuket would then put a stamp in my passport to show a transfer to Nong Khai.

I was a bit worried that if I went to Phuket immigration, they wouldn't know what they needed to do, or wouldn't have the right forms etc etc, but was assured by the Nong Khai office that "all immigration offices have the same forms, no problem". So what else could I do, I exited the Nong Khai office and started to plan a trip south.

Well. it's 10 days later and two days ago I went to Phuket immigration office. You guessed it, they know nothing about "transferring" a retirement visa. "You go Nong Khai, no problem" was the only response. So I had no choice, yesterday I applied for my retirement visa at Phuket immigration after updating my bank letter and got it no problem.

Quite how I am going to do my three month reporting, I don't know. Depends on the attitude of the Nong Khai office I guess.

I suppose the above will only apply to those who are moving to Udon, or recently moved there, from other areas of Thailand, but if the Nong Khai attitude doesn't change, better be prepared for a trip back to where ever you have just come from!

Just guessing, but I wonder if the fact that a new immigration office is about to open in Udon (or has opened already if you believe Nong Khai immigration office), has pisxed off the people at Nong Khai because they feel rejected/passed over. And so the attitude is now to follow the letter of the law and deal with as few farang as possible by refusing to deal with anyone that they can pass off to alternative immigration offices. Shouldn't be true, but stranger things have happened.

Any way, just a heads up for those moving to Udon area from elsewhere.

RO, as your spouse is Thai, I would assume they are eligible for a Thai passport, notwithstanding their US citizenship.

If that is the case, no visas would be required and they could come and go to/from Thailand as they wish on their Thai passport.

In your case, it seems you have a few options. Probably the simplest would be to get a multi-entry tourist visa from the US (2 x 90 days) each year, and do a border crossing at Nong Khai (or elsewhere) at the end of the first 90 days.

Alternatively, you could get a 12 month O or O-A visa in the US each year before you come to Thailand.

There is no such thing as a "retirement visa" issued in Thailand. You can get a 12 month extension of you O or OA, based on retirement, but this would require you to meet the normal financial requirements ie TBH800k in a Thai bank, or THB65k per month income, or a combination of the 2. It is hard to know how Immigration would treat your 6 months here, 6 months there situation, and whether it constitutes real "retirement".

Just had my worse ever 90 day report.

Walked into the Udon office, as couple people waiting for the Q. Go to the window for 90 day reports and the guy tells me to leave it there on the counter. I go sit down.

People come and go for the Q. The Q guy asks me what I'm waiting for. I tell him. He moves on to the next Q person. The guy behind the 90 day window goes in and out helping with the Q and doing other things.

The supervisor wanders out and helps with the Q. He asks what I'm waiting for. I tell him. He goes in and says something to the guy behind to 90 day window. About 10 minutes later I get the passport back.

All together a couple minutes shy of one hour. What sssholes!!!

I did the 90 day report on 1 July. In and out in less than 5 minutes. Got there about 09:15.

Sorry to hear about your lousy experience Udon Expat. Hope that's not any indication for future reporting. I've yet to have a bad experience at Udon immigration but things can, and do, change.

I have just got my extention to my O visa based on retirement. What I did, was to get the prober form, fill it out, got my paper from embassy showing my pension, my picture glued to the application, paid 1.900,- Bht, all together 20 min. i expedition time, but 3 hours in waiting time in the que because many farangs did not have the prober paper ready or did not bring the pictuer or whatever...so please read the instruction before entering the counter.
Same when I got my driver licence renewed I whent to the immigration showed proof of residense, got the paper, (remember to bring a photo too) paid 300 bht, then off to Nong Sung to land office, took the test (not driving only test for colorblind and reaction) 1 hour all together and I have a new 5 year drivers license for my car

Hi peoples,

Went to Laos on Wednesday for my visa run but never got to Udon Immigration due to mechanical problems. Thursday is a holiday due to Mothers day and I have since found out that Friday is a holiday for schools around our area. What I don't know is whether Friday is a holiday for other government departments as well including immigration. Is anybody aware if immigration is open tomorrow? If not how many days do I have for my 90 day reporting after crossing the border?

Thanks in advance

Kevro, if I understood your situation and question correctly, - that you've just done a border crossing and returned within the last few days, and are asking about 90 day reporting? If so, then your 90 days starts again new, from the date you re-entered Thailand, because you have given (notified) your address on the "arrivals card", when you came back into Thailand. :D

I don't know about Immigration opening tomorrow. I thought it was just the schools on holiday, but don't honestly know on that one.
