Thanks Arjay,

Found some phone numbers for immigration and Udon rang out. Called Nong Khai to check there and they answered and yep we open for business. Took a punt and went to Udon office and what do you know, closed.

One open , one closed. I should have known.

Oh well back to Udon Monday.

Kevro perhaps in NK you got through to the border post, rather than the main office.

The Post Office is closed in BD, so I suspect it is the same for all government offices (other than the essential services, as above).

Not really a problem. Got some shopping done and the Missus got to go to a restaurant she's heard (After Tesco's and 20 metres before the Khon Kaen lights and on the left) about and has wanted to trial.

I'm on the Nong Wua Sor side so its a 20 minute drive into Udon on Monday. I can live with that.

I actually don't see that as bad news, especially if this means there will be one more Immigration officer in the Udon office. (I hope he's not just a replacing somebody) I had Mr. Happy three consecutive years when going to Nong Khai. Never got a smile out of him, but he seemed efficient and never gave me a hard time.

A mate has to do his retirement renewal next week and was always dealt with by Mr Happy for many years without a problem. The Udon immigration office did start out by having 2 officers, one being the other immigration officer that was always at Nong Khai who always sat on the left.
Never saw him again.
You never know, the soap selling immigration officer should come to Udon, bigger farang base for her to sell the soap, trainers and whatever else she could get rid of 8)

Stopped by the Udon Immigration Office today to do the driver license residence certification scam. No sign of Mr. Happy while I was there but I didn't inquire so maybe he was on break or holiday if he is there. I would also add that I would be happy too see him there, as he always was quite efficient and helped me out when I had a serious screw-up due to erroneous advice from the U.S Consul.

Not good news for me, I had a serious run in with 'Mr Happy' 5 years ago where he refused to issue me with a residence letter for my license renewal over some minor technicality (Mare hadn't signed a photo copy of her ID card). Back in those days there was a sign on the wall saying something like "If you have a problem with our service you are invited to go up stairs and see our supervisor". I did that, with TW, and he came down and ordered 'Mr Happy' to issue the letter. Only ever had one more dealing with him and that was at AEK about 2 years later when I was getting a Re-entry visa, if looks could kill I was dead meat!

Also, what Malc didn't mention was, there was about 12 applicants there waiting. along comes three old Thai ladies, never took a number, goes to the woman officer, few whispers and money exchanges, gets sorted in 30 minutes!
We were there two hours.
Must say though there was three officers there,AND! now they have a rack to place their stamps! (But still left all over the table!)

Just a short updatye as is my wont, I happened by the Imigration office today to renew my VISA you know the 90day, hello I am alive etc...while the officer a new chap never seen before was processing the piece of paper, I just as an aside asked him when upon renewing my retirement Visa, did I actually need to supply a map of my house, having never done it and Ihad heard that it was now a requirement, could he please clarify.

Well firstly he apologised, i almost fell off the chair and then he said 'YES'. So I asked, "Why ?"
He replied that it was apparantly Bangkok head office requirement in case they wanted to come to see me. I replied thats nice why on earth would they want to come to see me,having lived in the same place for the last 7 years, The Mayor, Governor, Police, Ministry of health and Education know where I live as does the British and American Embassies, as I have had dealing with all of those people over the last 7 years, why oh why would Immigration want to come to see me. Would it be for a cup of tea ? I asked.
He smiled and said "NO", so my rather short reply was well you better ring before you come as I may be out. I then thanked him for his assistance and left.
Upon leaving I saw another chap doing his 90 day and the lady said do not forget next time Visa renewal she failed to mention a M AP, so I spoke to him he was completely unaware .
So it is obvious that a MAP is required by ALL applicants for VISAS for a renewal, once this has been done then maybe they will not want it for another 7-10 years.
I will of course pen a marvellous MAP in English, just as I used to do in my Military surveying days, they failed to tell me what size to do it, so anyone any suggestions. I thought about 10 by 8 ( feet ) .

Khun Paul,

Do you think one could just print a google map with the streets and aerial photo, then just circle the house...if we're living in the greater Udon area that is? Anyone have a comment on that. Seems logical to me.

I extended my "retirement" visa this month. I printed out a map of Udon Thani and then highlighted the route from the Immigration Office to my house. I also included my address and phone number on the print-out.

It was accepted with no questions asked.

The hilarious part about all this "map" business is that I have never met a Thai that could orient, read, decipher, or use a map to do anything,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :-"
