Things to do and places to see in Udon Thani.

Udon Thani Museum

Postby mekimosabe » August 28, 2006, 12:43 pm

I am visiting Udon Thani, and I see a museum icon at H9 but did not turn up any hits on searching here or google.

Not knowing how to speak/read Thai, i am wondering what to expect if i visit.

The museum is set in an old girls school behind Nong Prajak Lake. The museum is quite basic but contains some interesting information about the local area.

All displays are in English and Thai so don't worry if you don't speak or read the Thai language.

Are there anyother Museum in Udon?

I believe the US military stayed in Udon during the Vietnam war - is there any museum that goes into detail about that period of history?

I visited the Udon Thani Museum after resisting for 3-1/2 years. I was impressed and will go back. I was lucky enough to have one of the museum workers help with some translations (when not available).

It has some beautiful paintings most made by the same man. Describes in detail about Prince Prajak, the founder of Udon. It has a lot of history about the kings of Thailand. I didn't know some of the kings had fifty or sixty wives. I forget which ones, but they were busy, because there are photos of the children together. Sometimes 8-10 look all the same age. Much information about the monks in the area.

I did not see any mention of the Americans being here. There was a lot about the French though.

Admission to the Museum is free and will accept donations. No Farang pricing here. They made me feel very welcome and seemed happy I came to visit their establishment.
