slightly off topic but.......the last time we went to the US and the last time two times our daughter returned to the US from her vacation here (all within 3 years), we've arrived at Suvarnapumi 2 hours prior to departure without any problem.

Most airlines close their check ins 45 minutes prior to departure. You may have been standing in a queue for an hour and 15 so are they going to refuse you passage? Are they bollocks. Like he said, within 2 hours no problem. How in the name of **** can they show you were not there in time? How many times do you see some mip mop get on the plane 10 minutes after everyone else?

Right, I don't care if you think I am a troll, here is my experience with Thai Airways which is annoying me.
Before I go into the story, here is a summary: I have booked my GF a ticket with Thai Airways from Bangkok to UTH, over the internet using my credit card. When I got the email reply I found that she has to present MY credit card when she checks in, a bit hard when I'm in Australia. I asked her to phone them to see if it was really necessary-yes it is. I tried the FAQ of the website, and there is a way around it, I can attend any of the offices in Australia in person, th only problem is that they are all 4.5 hours away by plane. Brilliant, and because it was a cheap fare I can't cancel it, even better! So now I have to see if there is any way around this including asking them to take my payment NOW, not next Friday when she flies, otherwise I will have to tell them to shove their booking and inform my card company not to honour the transaction.

Great. What a fantastic company.

For those who care, she is attending a conference in Bangkok. Despite what you may believe and her rank (yes she is a real proper MAJOR), the army only pays for bus fares there and back, so to help her get back earlier I thought I'd buy her a flight. Unfortunately the conference doesn't finish until after 1600, hence she will miss the AA flight and I booked Thai. Never again!

Do what you can to Cancel Thai and Re book with NOK. My wife has booked them online with no problem in the past. By the way, this show your Credit Card thing is only new. I tried to book Thai through to Udon return a Fortnight ago and Thai wouldn't except my payment without going through a "Verified by Visa System". I had the whole thing reset by my Bank but it still wouldn't accept my Password so I booked through Tiger instead and saved $400 :D It's just C@4p shorley if the Ticket is Booked in some one's Name they can Verify It with a Passport or ID Card 8)

Thanks, the old airport is a lot closer to the city, isn't it? From memory it is, but the last nok flight is 1700 it seems so she may be struggling with a 1600 finish to get there I reckon.
The itenerary says I can't cancel, but like I say I will instruct my card company not to pay-it may cost me money, but it's the principle as well!.
I'll see what Monday brings and if I can make them see sense.
Cheers.

I have a Scam in mind  Phone her an Hour before the Meeting finishes. She can then apologise telling them her Son fell off his Bike and Cracked his Head, and she must go to him immediately, giving her an extra Hour to Check in :D

Their booking conditions should alert to that situation, - the need to present your visa card when checking in.

I accidentally made the same mistake with Nok Air quite recently, - booking a flight for my wife who would be travelling on her own and paying with my credit card over the Internet. I rang them and asked their advice. They asked me to fax a copy of my credit card to them in Bangkok and told me they would pass a copy to Udon airport. All went well, - no problems. :D

Another option might be for your GF to go into a Thai Air office in Bangkok and offer to pay cash, in return for them re-crediting your credit card.

I'd try the first idea first.

I like both ideas, thanks.

Beware booking Thai Airways on the internet.

Postby petemcc » August 14, 2010, 10:37 pm

DO NOT book a Thai Airways flight for a third person via the internet using a credit card unless you with, or the third person with your card(!) can be physically present, otherwise they can't fly.

Instead book any other airline that exists in the 21st century of doing business.

A message of advice brought to you from me.

When I booked my Thai flight from BKK to Udon in early August I did so from the UK.
The site clearly said that I could only pay by credit card (was actually debit) if I could present that card when booking in for the flight. That seemed strange to me, but certainly not onorous as I carry my card anyway.
When booking my National Express ticket from Cheltenham to Heathrow I could not use my debit card until I had gone through the 'registration' of my HSBC card. As I am registered as having a Thai address with HSBC but was physically in England I had to register by phone. This was a painless & pretty quick task that involved 5 minutes on the phone while by a computer.
Why do I mention the card thing??? Just to show that ALL organisations are tightening up their processes in order to stop fraud & possible terrorist transactions.
Personally I am very happy about that!!

I think the terrorist thing is complete crap-no flame on you, or disrespect, the same as putting liquids and gels in a plastic bag stops them being explosive constituents when combined, because let's face it, they do not run the toothpaste through a mass spectrometer.

Fraud? Well in my case a fare paid for 1 week in advance, the vendor has plenty of opportunity to check if the card is legit, automatically. When I use my MasterCard abroad and forget to tell my bank, I get phone calls on my registered mobile phone almost immediately asking where I am, that is security.

Now consider this. Most airlines, dare I say it budget airlines, take your card payment when the ticket is booked, therefore giving them a day or two to be informed if the transaction is fraudulent. The airfare I booked is not refundable, or able to be changed, therefore the credit card payment should be taken immediately, as no refund is available...follows?

Personally I think it is just Thai Airways being wankers. There was no pre-warning when I booked, only when i received the e-ticket conformation. If they were so fucken aware, why was something flagged when booking saying, 'attention, the person paying for this isn't the one on the booking, WTF are you doing ?' But no, no flagging.

Anyway, I will sort it and let you all know how.
Cheers

That is not the way the Thai Airways site worked for me from the UK Pete.
I would certainly agree that (given that they have the passenger details) it is poor of them if they did not 'warn' if a user tried to enter a credit card with a different name attached that they might have a problem. My passenger name 7 CC name matched & they still warned me that I needed the card.

Pete,
I assume you've already purchased the ticket on-line.
If you go to the Terms and Conditions it mentions about the cardholder being present at check-in but there's a feed "see regulations" which advises going to your local Thai Airways office with booking details, card and indentity where you can fill out an authorisation form. They'll give you a further reference to be used at check-in. (Defeats the object of booking on-line somewhat!!)
This is from memory ... please verify if you have any luck.
