If you like driving, which i do, then its a comfortable days drive to Hua Hin.
6.5 hours to BKK, with stops for fuel , toilet and ad in a Police check also.
Hu Hin is then another 1.45 hours , the quickest way through BKK according to my GPS, is just stick to the main freeway / toll way, once you hit Rangsit and continue right into the city and look for Port signs at the 3rd toll way , this tollway takes u right through BKK and over the river and ur on ur way.
Good easy road to Hua Hin , well sign posted

Rideswings
Just saw the update on your car's speed. Mine is based on 100-110 kph
Revert to OT's plan, Stay at Saraburi or even Khao Yai , then another 4-5 hrs the next day

We used Chantour and took the bus from 10 pm that arrives in Bangkok at 6 am, it was 550 baht per person, Chantour calls this S-class, it is quite luxurious, every seat has it's own touch-screen on witch you can choose what you want to watch.Rideswings wrote:Jorg can you tell me how much the bus cost to bangkok from Udon and did you go VIP? What time did you depart Udon and arrive in BKK? Did you take a taxi from the clock center to your hotel? Is the Hua Hin water clear as Phuket or dark and murky like Pattaya?
Thanks everyone.
So if you continue right away somehow you should go from the North-East bus-station to the Southern bus-station. I don't know how much a taxi is, but it is about 20 km from the North-East to the Southern.
We walked from the clock centre to the hotel, it was only a 5 minute walk. Were they let you out of the bus there are two streets coming together, you have to walk back in the direction the bus came from, but take the street on the right (Neb Kehardt rd).
The water is not clear, in my opinion it also is not the best sea to swim in (because of the rocks and the shells), the beach is great to walk on, but not so good for sunbathing.

Re: Udon to Hua Hin, how should we go?
if you take the VIP bus to Bangkok - the northern busstation has now got VIP mini bus to huahin, I think going every 30 minute
there are a lot off free room in Huahin, but take care from saturday to sunday one million people from bangkok -
I like personel to stay in the center, can walk around in the evening and take motorbike to beach or around.
but personel I not like huahin but you has to find out alone
good trip
but if she not like to travel so far in the car, why not make a trip with many stop and looking around

Re: Udon to Hua Hin, how should we go?
I would make use of your car and drive, more relaxed, will have at your disposal once there and on the way, less hassles of transferring to different route servers. Mo Chit bus station or train station to southern terminal, unless taking train all the way, which schedule might not work, as last time i took train out of Bangkok, there were only 2, and it's shy of 4 hours trip, just a bit longer than bus, but much cheaper, and has a dining car, along with vendors plying their wares at various stops.
If deciding to drive, I've done it a few times, about 10 hours from Nong Khai muang area, highway no. 2 to no. 9 East (you will see signs for 9 west to Swampy first), to no. 35 to no. 4, quite easy and you avoid most of Bangkok. Would recommend an early start, which puts you on the other side of Bangkok before rush hour. Travel to Hua Hin on a non Friday or Saturday, and return on a non Sunday, as weekender traffic is not pleasant. if max speed is 80 kph, then you will not have to worry about traffic ticket, just stay out of the right lane. should take you a leasurely 11 hour drive from Udon Thani. This route will avoid Rangsit area and top of Bangkok, along with the majority of Bangkok traffic.
There are alway 4 of us, so beneficial financially to drive. I would avoid driving at night time, since you are not familiar with the roads. Don't bother with the Khon Kaen bypass, as longer than driving through town, even during rush hour. The rest is quite easy, though you will not see signs for Hua Hin until you are in Petchaburi province, so know where you are headed, and a good map helps. Numerous place to stay under 1000 baht with pool, as the beach is not really for swimming, quite disgusting actually. Rates increase on the weekend for Bangkok people. Things clear up a bit south of main beach, as horse don't go there. We won't even go to main city beach, over crowded with chairs and umbrellas, and smell of horse piss. So if going, don't walk barefooted at that part of beach. Cha Am is a favorite spot also, and a better beach to swim at, also pricing is about the same. Cha Am being about 12 kilometers north of Hua Hin.

Thanks =D>jorg wrote:It's quiet, windy and there are lots of rocks in the sea. Definitely not overrun with people trying to sell you junk, you can take a ride on a horse, so there are some people trying to sell that. But they are not pushing. The night market is very nice, and there also some other markets to be found. Night life is okay also, enough bars and restaurants.wayne747 wrote:How is the beach in Hua Hin ? Nice, or overrun with peddlers of junk and lots on longtail boats ?
BTW, the Thai or Air Asia price depends on the season and when you book.
Have a great trip down there

There is a nice beach at the very south end of Hua Hin - you can't go any further because there is a rocky headland (and an interesting Wat).
Not at all crowded, and a reasonable restaurant right on the beach, with cold beers available.

Udon to Hua Hin, how should we go?
Hi Guys
Just reading this thread and you may want to know there is now a daily executive bus service from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Hua Hin and vice versa for only 305 baht each way.
It's an excellent service by all reports so if you wanted to have a few days by the beach etc this may be an alternative and cheaper route to use. The web site is as follows

Cheers

If you decide to drive or any one else driving any where just log into Travelmate.com.au
Click on the small "mapmaker" tab, enter your from and to locations and up will pop a directional map and below a line by line direction with all the exact kilometer and meters, plus thai route numbers. Print it out and away you go.
Used it a number of times and been successful?

Barney I tried Travelmate, but with their server being located in Oz, the connection was brutishly slow.
You can get exactly the same detail, and a whole lot quicker, by using google Maps http://maps.google.com/ , and simply typing <from (eg Udon Thani) to (eg Hua Hin)> into the search box.
In fact, Travelmate looks like it has been lifted directly from google Maps.

Udon to Hua Hin, how should we go?
Hi Jackspratt,
I have never had the slow access problem, used it for a number of years now especially when i had a work truck while in Map ta Phut area. Had to find my own way around when the driver was off evenings and on weekends and when would travel Pattaya to KK. If google is the same then that is an excellent alternative. I have aways had the mapmaker tab listed as a favourite on the laptop and it comes up quickly.
Thanks for the hint about google.
I find printing the rpute out much easier for my little TG to understand and read instead of the normal road map. Saves a lot of confusion.

Re: Udon to Hua Hin, how should we go?
guys (if you are driving, OP looks to be bussing it), I just did this run with the wife & kids. There are some handy roads that cut across the top of Bangkok that save you from the mess, check the map below... if you go balls out pedal to the metal no stopping except for gas and one quick 20 minute meal you can do Cha Am to Udon in 10 hours flat on a weekday average 120KM per hour with a couple lulls where there's congestion. you leave at 10 you get in my 8. That misses all rush hour traffic along the route.Rideswings wrote:Jorg can you tell me how much the bus cost to bangkok from Udon and did you go VIP? What time did you depart Udon and arrive in BKK? Thanks everyone.
the map covers Korat to just above Cha Am.
North to South it's AH12 to the 9 to the 346 to the 321 to the 4. GPS is useful if you want to save time and not miss any exits, the roads here are hardly intuitive.
When night hits, first few bastards that ride up your back, figure out which one knows the roads after they pass you. If they keep 120km steady even through pitch black perfect precision, those are the tail lights to guide off of & follow all the way. Cuts another 45 mins off the trip easy.
OP -as for the water, it's murky. I wouldn't swim in it and I used to surf Venice Beach California back when we'd turn green from who knows what was being dumped out there.
I was hoping for the nice stuff but the Gulf looks to be more about freight shipping than beauty. The open ocean e.g. Andaman side is much more beautiful, I'd rate the gulf a 4 or 5, and the Andaman an 8, on a scale of one to ten, places like Hawaii or the Maldives being the 9's & 10's.
If you take the bus go VIP no matter what. And try to avoid getting sat in the middle of the bottom section as that's where the toilet is on some of the crap busses.
