UK bank for ex pats ?

Postby easterneye » April 2, 2010, 1:26 pm

Hi all

Could anyone please be kind enough to let me know of a UK bank that will allow you to have an account whilst you live in Thailand as an expat . When I move here for good I will have no UK address
Thankyou

Don't know if they are all the same but Lloyds closed my account when they found out I was no longer on the electoral role.
Cheeky buggers sent me a cheque, payable to me , drawn on their bank .Had a hell of a job getting it cashed .I had , up to then used my daughters home address in the UK for communication, but of course I wasn't registered for voting or local poll tax there .So they must have done a survey.

Banking side very much depends on the bank you are using & the rules associated with the account you have.
Because i knew that some banks had issues with English taxpayers being their customers if they lived outside the country I also knew that HSBC did not.
So I went online & opened an account - which necessitated me taking some 'proof of identity' into my local branch before it was activated. That 'Local Branch' in the UK still officially remains my HSBC branch - although they are well aware of my Thailand address & send documents to me here. While in conversation with HSBC in the past they have asked if I would like my account to be transferred to Bangkok (which I think is their only Thailand Branch) I have always said No thanks & never an issue..
I do all my banking via the web as well & HSBC do not have an issue sending debit cards to Thailand - I am not sure about credit cards though, as I have never asked. As any new cards need to be activated via your web account & no 'pin number' is posted theft would be an inconvenience rather than an issue..

Easterneye, there shouldn't be a problem in you having or opening a UK bank account (per say), simply because you live in Thailand.

(Assuming you don't already have an account), it's more a case of the difficulties of satisfying the Money Laundering legislation requirements. That means, supplying the bank with documentation to verify your ID, - usually a passport, or a Uk driving licence, and separate documentation to verify your address, such as a utility bills, (not mobile phone) bank or credit card statements.

I continue to maintain a UK bank account, since moving to Thailand, though I have opened other accounts since, through the Internet using my address in Thailand. For the latter I had to send certified copies of my passport and I used UK credit card/other bank statements (originals) to verify my address here.

If you visit the UK often, it may be easier to open an account whilst you are there, after deciding whether you would use an address in Thailand, or an address in the UK. You would of course have to produce suitable documents (as suggested above) addressed to you at whatever address you chose to use.

Have you got any family/friends back in the YUK?
If you can keep a postal/care of address you shouldn't have any probs \:D/ ... you'll even still get your heating allowence ( if you've retired ) whilst you're over here sweating! :D

And of course you will be giving false information that can be deemed as breaking the law with very severe financial penalties . :-"
