UK Passport/Citizenship help

Postby neeemu » May 19, 2011, 1:33 pm

First of all the basic background. I'm British and my wife, who's Thai, has just given birth to our son in Udon Thani.
I've been looking into citizenship and all things related but a few things have confused me and would appreciate any help.

Firstly, I've noticed it's possible to register a British child born overseas' birth with the British Embassy, but I haven't picked up on the actual benefits of this. As it costs about 9000 Baht, is it really worthwhile doing? If it will help the little fella in any way then I'd have no issues paying.

Secondly, obtaining a British passport for the first time for him seems straight forward until I get to the counter signatory.
One of the requirements is they must live in the UK, another that they cannot be related in anyway. The only person from the UK to visit him is my mother. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of what to do in these circumstances?

UK Passport/Citizenship help

Postby pienmash » May 19, 2011, 2:51 pm

I registered my sons birth , obtained British citizenship and got him a Brit passport approx 7 years ago when his mum and i divorced and i got custody of him . i did it all by post , it took 10 days and was pretty painless . Since then my son and i have only been back to blighty once for 2 weeks thats the only time hes used his pasport , i got him it mainly for him in later life possibly for work overseas or generally easier to travel visa wise., he now holds dual nationality and to be honest im not sure at what point that this has to become single.

I do remember i got the passport ok , and ref a counter signatory - a Britih national residing in Thailand did it , so possibly the rules have changed .

Hope that hepls n good luck.

UK Passport/Citizenship help

I might try registering his birth and speak to the Embassy with regards to counter signatory. I know to obtain British passports in Thailand you have to apply to Hong Kong as of last year. Think it still goes through the Embassy in Bangkok though just takes a bit longer.
Anyway thanks for the response, will give it a try in the next few weeks as need to get a few documents translated first.

If the passport is a first passport for a young person then it should be sent to the Embassy in Bangkok not Hong Kong, see attached link:
