BANGKOK – The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok is offering to evacuate family members of its staff in the volatile Thai capital and has issued a travel warning advising American citizens to stay away.

Embassy spokeswoman Cynthia Brown says the State Department has "authorized the voluntary departure" of relatives of its employees in Bangkok and "will provide financial assistance" for their travel.

Brown says the U.S. also issued a "travel warning advising all citizens to defer travel to Bangkok."

Until Saturday, the U.S. had placed Bangkok under a "travel alert" that advised citizens to defer nonessential travel.

I agree, it does seem a bit alarmist.
They don't mention where they're evacuating them to ... Chiang Mai for a week?

More people are killed on the streets of Washington DC over a good weekend, that have been killed in this months-long skirmish.

The American Ambassador held a briefing less than 10 days ago at the Marriott in BKK...At that briefing the Embassy Security Chief spoke and made the point that the situation did NOT call for evacuation...10 days later...a different story...Yes, it appears that things have changed...

of course, who would have imagined the entire area inlcuding the American embassy cordoned off and bullets zinging down the street in front of it!
