Views of a New and Infrequent Poster

Postby Bronco » April 4, 2009, 10:22 am

Hello, I introduced myself on my 1st post.

I'm one of those posters who don't post much. Not because I'm afraid of ridicule but mostly because I defer to those who are living there, done that. How much can I offer other than questions?I have followed the posts long enough to know the regular posters and have a feel for where they're coming from. Comraderie, I'm definitely for that, I was in the navy in the early 70's and that was the main thing I enjoyed,we all had a common interest to discuss and it made the group tight. The same thing with being an expat in Thailand. It doesn't matter where you come from, everyone has a common bond, that makes for conversation and mutual interests.I miss that.
I don't feel to post on other forums but rather to read and let it go. On this forum I feel different, more comfortable, it's an older crowd more my age.

I must say that I tried to keep the cost of living thread going and was disappointed that many of the regular posters didn't give estimates of their monthly expenditures. That's their call. I can respect that.
I personally think that the majority of posters here are intelligent, helpful and considerate(don't believe it?just read some of the other Thailand related forums). My posts are geared towards the issues related to moving and retiring in the area.

My wife's family's from Bangkok, but we can't afford to live how we'd like (a house) in that area and we both would like to drive.Asking questions of those living in Udon/Nong Khai is how I'm hoping to find answers to all the questions I have.I have a good friend who I know is giving me the straight skinny on living in Nong Khai but everyone would like to hear more than 1 answer to their questions. I made some mistakes and now we're in the process of her getting American citizenship(she can get rid of green card and collect social security abroad).I've gotten some great response from some Udonmap members (you know who you are-Thank you). They've really reconfirmed what I'd thought all along. You are decent guys who really want to help people succeed. Sure there's banter among friends, where isn't there?

I think most posters that ask questions here are in the age bracket (the poll will tell you the age bracket)of the members themselves.I know I'm computer illiterate and I knew what an O/S was but hardly more than that and I know MALC sounds much like me, when it comes to computers.

When I settle in and gain some knowledge, feel comfortable in answering, I will gladly help those in my situation now. Until then I'll fumble my way through and ask questions.I guess they're not stupid from my point of view or I wouldn't ask them but I can see posters tire of redundancy.

Even though I'm not a big poster, I am a big reader of your posts and would like to say thanks for your time distributing all the useful information.

Thanks for the post Bronco. I think the forum staff should consider placing this at the top of the Board Index as a MUST READ FOR NEW POSTERS.

Great post Bronco. It is true what you say and as a Mod we do our best to keep it that way. Sorry to say we are not 100% sucessful. There are some that think this is there personal attack forum, a forum to post non-witty remarks, and just plain rubbish. Most of this is done within the rules so in a way we can not stop all the above.

I to like a bit of ribbing and jokes but then there are some who think that is all they can do. However there are threads where one can do this and not all over the board. To these people, why not go on stage and get your personal satisfaction from the crowd (most likely negative).

As long as people follow the rules you are free to post as you like. I would only like to ask all to read Broncos remarks and remember to be a bit more careful on their replys.

Sorry, I have to offer another perspective on this.

- Moderators have the authority to amend or delete all personal attacks as harassment is outside the rules.

- A sense of humour is subjective, so a reply that one poster might see as banter is maybe seen as 'non-witty remarks' by another. However, such remarks stand a chance of being deleted should they go off topic as it's tantamount to hijacking another person's thread.

- There is plenty of rubbish on the Forum. A lot of it is due to inebriated posters who have lost the ability to write coherent sentences! But that can also be deleted or amended by the Moderators.

- Finally, Moderators have the option of sending a PM to a detractor to ask him to think again about what he posts.

These are the guidelines as I understand them. Now I realise that a Moderator's job constitutes a lot of work and is undoubtedly thankless so maybe you need more Moderators. I note Kev47 has been a Moderator since February 09 but I've yet to see him do his stuff. Maybe the burden of moderating should be shared more equally.

Chawk dee.

I agree with you Westerby, that is why little is deleted or moved.

The only thing I do disagree with you on is sending a PM as to why. I used to do that but have not done it as most do not agree with the reason it was deleted or moved. If it is against the rules no PM is deserved. All have read the rules when you signed up so should know them. If you have something moved or deleted, you should send a Mod a PM asking why. If you post rude, threatening, trolling, spam, vulgar or statements against the host country, one should know it is not right. Most know they are wrong and do not do this. Some do send PM's and they are answered unless rude or threatening.

I have said all this to say, "very little is moved or deleted." As I said before, if you follow the rules, you do not get moved or deleted. One other thing, please stay on topic.

I can't agree with you banpaeng. There has been a recent huge shift in the goal posts, with posts/threads that are neither threatening, trolling, spam, vulgar or statements against the host country being arbitrarily deleted.

If this is a commercial decision I can understand. However, it at least deserves some explanation to those who have posted under the terms of what they understand the current "rules" to be.

After all, other forums are still allowing posts (within reason) on subjects that seem to be verboten on UM.

I sidetracked the thread, as I realise it wasn't about moderation matters. However, suffice it to say the goal posts haven't been moved, they've always been there, it's just that some members never saw them, or took no notice. I was not trying to re-paint them They can be found here:

Now lwts return to the statements by Bronco.

Thanks All for the welcome,
I mentioned I like this forum. In fact it's the first thing every morning after I grab my coffee.I enjoy it more than the paper. The things discussed on here could conceivably affect my and my Mrs's life,I feel much more so than what I read in the paper.
I realize it's hard to believe what's stated in these threads can have such an impact on someone you don't know but for someone that may not be living in the area, the experiences you've had tells alot about what someone should and could expect.
It's probably something that many haven't thought of,how your words and views can shape a vision of what life is like there.Words are powerful. They can give rise to power or take it down.Make or break relationships, cause confusion or definition. So many decisions are made from words.
Many articulate people reside here, along with many who may not express themselves as well as they'd like with analogies and the command of the dictionary others enjoy, irregardless, there are many, many real people here and I like real people.

These are a few questions I hope everyone will chime in on if you feel comfortable.
1)Any regrets for living here instead of your home country(assuming everything was equal)?
2)Aside from your family relationships, what would attract you to live here(Udon/Nong Khai)?

As I've mentioned,
most of what I can contribute is questions(at least in the beginning)but to me they're important questions.Maybe to other newbies also. Thanks for all your patience.
