Where can I buy a VHS Video player?

Post by treehugger » April 16, 2011, 8:23 pm

I have a lot of VHS tapes and need a VHS Video player. I have checked a large number of shops in Udon with no success. :( Does anyone know of a shop that has one actually in stock? :D Any pointers appreciated.

I don't know any shops around here that stock them anymore... as a last resort try this:

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=vhs+pl ... 86.c0.m359

I often buy my motorcycle parts the same way... can be faster than ordering from Japan, and often cheaper too.

Good luck ;)

treehugger, I have a Daewoo DVR-S04 - DVD recorder/ VCR combo I brought with me when I came to Udon Thani a few years ago. I used it to convert several of my old VHSs to DVDs years ago but I have not used it at all in recent days (not plugged in/not connected). I do not want to sell it thinking that I may someday run into some old classics in VHS. However, you are welcome to borrow it. Note that it requires AC 120V and I may also have a converter for you to borrow as well (need to find a spare one in the house). Please pm me if I can be of a help. Cheers.

Bit the same as the 'audio cassettes' to pc discussion that Trubrit started really Jed. Except even more choices at every stage.
Need Hardware & software & there are many choices about which of each you get.

In its' simplest form just connect your VHS player up to the PC via cabling. Same set up as connecting a music cassette player.
Use software to record the video digitally onto the PC as the tape player plays it.
Use software to manipulate the videos once you have recorded them (add them together etc.)
Use software to burn onto CDs or DVDs.

As you an imagine this is very long winded process to complete.
I know at one time HP produced a piece of hardware to do it - just a little bigger than a cassette that fitted to the PC via a USB that (I believe) recorded onto the PC at faster than normal playing time. If someone had a large number to convert (really other than commercial movies as well) then investigating something like that would be worth while.

Converting commercial movies or old TV series really is not worth the time & effort as they are all up on the net for sharing already (in a better quality than the VHS conversion will give you)..

It is certainly worth doing a fair bit of planning before doing it though, decided how you are going to store the digitalised version & what the play off is in size between the different qualities/types of digital recording.

What PRichard is talking about is a device that has a VCR-player and a DVD-recorder. You just put in the video-cassette, play it and record it on a DVD. Very simple.

That's what I'm talkin' bout, jorg; now wonder how much one of those puppies cost?

Or who might have one I can rent?!?

Thanks for the tips as well, Bob.

Gotta do it sometime soon before the tapes degrade even more; some important stuff I'd like to save from them.

jorg – yes, exactly that simple.

Jed – if you want, you can use my DVR-S04 (free - no need to rent, cheers). You would need to get DVD+R or DVD+RW disc (I also have several blanks available). Also note that the unit only allows copying of a non copy- protected VHS to a DVD. Please pm me if I can be of a help.

PRichard: Just a quick note to thank you for your kindness and generosity.

You were a great help with regard to this problem, which is much appreciated.

Many kind souls apparently read UM regularly; and write little except when they can help others.

Wish you guys would write more...

Still, nice just knowing you're out there, participating in this most useful community forum in your own way.

Many thanks again.
