Talking to friends who have businesses on Koh Chang and Phuket they talked of a far more dramatic drop in numbers, more like 40% down on last year. With rooms still available and advertised on the net for Christmas and New Year.

I spent New Year in Cha Am and was amazed just how quiet it was, the wife talked to street traders and they all said they had never seen in like this before.

I get the feeling 6.6% is a very optimistic figure.

I believe Laos is very much on the up with tourism

I was recently in Koh Samui , Chiang Mai as well as Udon and in all three places I heard Thai people saying high season was well down , personally I thought all three areas were no less busy than previous years ive been at crimbo :-k

Both Laos & Vietnam are continuing to increase the number of tourists they receive.
However they are still very small beer when compared to the 20M+ that Thailand expects..

The figures for last year for Laos were 3.5M & they have plans to increase it - but only to 7.5M by 2020.

Vietnam also were up about 4% on the previous year, but that was to 7.9M visitors..

interesting view. Vang Vieng, Vientiane and Luang Prabang were full of people over the Christmas period. It took real effort to find a room.
