Was discussing this the other day. Decided the best way was to employ an agent. Costs 5000 baht and saves all the hassle of going to BKK.

Was just about to post the same Galee ..yes when you add up the costs involved traveling to Bkk , a hotel and the evening cultural entertainment if one chooses to partake it works out more cost effective to use an agent.

I renewed my UK passport last July and,as far as I know, the system is unchanged.
There is no need to stop overnight.I booked my appointment for 11am.I caught the Udon-Bangkok Thai Lion Air flight at 7.45am and returned the same day on the afternoon flight around 3.30pm.I did this also to pick up my new passport later.....time for a mooch around Terminal 21,a bit of lunch and a beer if you wish.
Total cost of the flights involved was around 2,500 baht.
I did think about useing an agent but what put me off is on the application form you have to write down all your credit card details, including the security code.
I,m just a bit wary who I give this info too, although I,ve not heard of anyone who has had a problem doing this.
Whatever method you use the total costs involved are very similar.
Good luck.

At the moment, no. I'll make a phone call and get back to you.

Agent contact number 038420313. Think his name is Darren. Comes recommended by a couple of friends.

It was about 2 weeks down the line,I think.
Best thing is to give them 3 dates and times.
They will get back to you if none are available,so you try 3 more.
The Thai staff were very friendly and accomodating.I treated it as a couple of days out and enjoyed it.....if you have the correct documentation absolutely no need to worry.

The fastest passport renewal I experienced was 13 days and the longest was 18 days using DIY.

Darren's service is reliable but there would be no time saving as you still have to collate, complete and send him your application and payment info (with his fee added on) that he then submits. He collects it when it's ready and sends it back so the only saving is the time/cost of a couple of Bangkok round trips.

Just a footnote if the OP is thinking of shopping around for a faster, cheaper agent, there aint one. Darren's is the only registered Thai business with permission from the UK Passport Office to front the services of VFS who in turn remain the sole appointed, official UK passport application handlers in Thailand.

That's good news.
I had to renew mines at the end of 2014. Just after the UK Gov had decided to move all renewals back to sunny Liverpool. Back then you had to attend in person at the application center to both submit the application and receive the new passport, a real pain in the rear.

Thank you, I'll pass it on.

EDIT: Quite an impressive WEB Site. My friend made a call and was very happy with the way it went. 10000 Baht covers all costs including the new passport (bank transfer to their account). The forms can be downloaded from their site (see post above). He is going to proceed with this renewal plan. ;)
