@ FrazeeDK, thank you for the info. We have a enterprising young girl charging the Thais 50 Baht to go through this BS for them. Mrs Dero and her daughter used her services recently. Even though we are in the Udon province they were able to book an online appointment at Sawan Dan Din (Sakon Nakhon) and get their new licenses there.

Our local clinic (just up the road in the village) has 2 "Doctors" Mrs Dero has put the question to them about the new medical form requirement = the jury is still out!

new medical form downloaded from DLT is up further in the string.. The 2nd half is for a doctor to fill out, insert their medical license number and probably stamp and sign it.. We're heading down to a nearby clinic tomorrow morning to get them done then driving out to Non Soong to renew our licenses...

the wife and I renewed our licenses today..

- For the medical certificate we went down to a clinic by Nong Bua Market. It took about 2 minutes and cost 100 baht. The clinic already had the new forms. Located here: https://www.google.co.th/maps/@17.39772 ... 8192?hl=en

Drove out to the DLT office at Non Soong arriving about 1040. Driver's License office is on the 2nd floor You turn your paperwork into the lady at reception, she checks it, in my case for copy of passport, copy of extension page, copy of yellow house book, medical certificate and DLT video lesson completion certificate, attaches a queue number and sends you to Window 1. There they review your paperwork and check you in the computer. In my case my license from 5 years ago had my old passport number on it. My new passport had the Immigration info transfer info with the old passport number which required me to get a copy of that page for the packet. After processing they sent me over to the physical checks: 1. reaction test with brake. 2. depth perception test (two rods in a box they expect you to line up from 4 meters away) 3. peripheral vision test 4. color perception test. Then to the payment window. (505 baht for renewal) Then to taking your picture and issuing the new license. The wife and I were out the door at 11:20 so 40 minutes total.

<Snip> If you do this prior to going out to Non Soong's Land Transport office you won't need to watch the video there. https://www.dlt-elearning.com/Home
Looks like I'm knackered. Not having a "Pink" ID card the system will not let me register to pre-watch the video and do the quiz!

I never bothered to get a pink card but the number in the Yellow Book works for registering to watch the movie online

i remember a discussion on here a while ago ,about how "useless" Yellow books and Pink cards were ... it seems having them can help you out now and then ...

<snip> and #3 How many seconds are there for reaction time: 5-8 seconds <snip>
Is that the answer they expect? Sure it's not 5 to 8/10ths of a second?

on the ID number to register for the on-line video. Mind you I did say that although it has the 13 digit ID openings I didn't know if sticking a shorter Passport number in there would work or not. Try it and see...

The Aust. passport ID system uses both alpha and numeric characters, tried all combinations without success.

the system does not (yet?) work with the passport ....only your thais id number on yellow book or pink id card ,to fill in on the thais id section not passport section ... ;)

so how about if you use your passport number and fill up the rest with zeroes? I had my pink ID card number in it which printed out onto the video completion certificate. The license office receptionist did not ask for my pink ID to validate the number. She just stapled the certificate to the packet.. I don't think the DLT system bounces the entered ID number against any database.

A Thai persons national ID number is also entered on their Thai DL.

A foreigners passport number is used for personal ID on their Thai DL.

My first Thai DL was acquired before I got a yellow book. At the last renewal, over 5 years ago, I brought my yellow book and pink ID card but they didn't use that 13-digit number for ID on the DL, they stuck with the passport number. Maybe that's their rules when it comes to foreigners but I wouldn't be surprised is someone does have their Thai ID number on their DL instead of their passport number.

TiT
YMMV

That can’t work as the ID number has a checksum built into it, in the same way as credit card numbers do.

Correct - my yellow book number is used on my Thai MDL.

as mentioned up in the string when I renewed my Thai driver's license last week I had my pink ID, my Yellow book as well as my passport and all relevant copies. They still put my current passport number on the license

It sounds like it could depend on which office you attend.

In my case, all my licence interactions have been at Nong Han.

Thanks for that clarification. Just to further dilute the YMMV factor, did you have a Thai DL before you acquired the yellow book and pink card? If so, they may have used your passport number originally and then changed it to the locally issued ID during a subsequent renewal?

I know at AEK Udon, they never bothered changing from passport ID to alien ID but were happy to reissue a DL to match a new passport number. I never asked then if it was possible or if they could do it so maybe it was a case of "too hard" by the large, indolent youth operating the license machine that day (and forgot to put an expiry date on the license!)
