American Civil War

Post by stattointhailand » April 12, 2021, 6:06 pm

seeing as none of our colonial cousins seem to have mentioned it,

today marks the 160th Anniversary

RIP to all those Ancestors who did not make it through to the end

I like many had family who served on both sides

Canada had people fighting for both the rebels and the Union. Lord Palmerston ran our foreign policy at the time, and he wanted the Confederates to win as that would mean a weaker U.S.A. and less of a threat to Canada (British North America). The plaque of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President, was removed from the Hudson's Bay store in Montreal. https://montrealgazette.com/sponsored/m ... n-montreal and https://www.ctvnews.ca/test-site/outstr ... -1.3548093

Judging by recent political upheaval in the USA I thought it was still an ongoing war .

Anniversary of the start, no? I think they already have Memorial Day for a national remembrance of the end of that war.

Or maybe they feel it would be overshadowed by National Pets Day on the 11th?
