Can anyone advise if, sold a packet of cigarettes or a carton say in laos or bars that, before you open the packet and smoke buffalo tomtit, that it is fake.
Is someone pulling my leg that the barcode reveals everything,ie if 3 or 8 at the end it is real, any other then prepare for a lung collapse! I told him to foxtrot oscar but now it has got me checking every packet I buy.

Well if Your Benson + Hedges say Henson + Bedges on the pack they are fakes.. nahh.

surely they can copy identical packaging too ie : same same numbers on them.
until you fire it up it might be hard to spot.

You can usually tell from the packaging, not only the design on the front but the size, I'm not a smoker but I did used to buy and sell them on in the UK when I returned from Thailand before and some regular smokers knew straight away the difference before touching the box.
It's been a while since I bothered doing it though since everyone seems to be giving up!

I used to take Dunhill home for my neighbour from BKK airport but now buy in OZ on the way in. She said they used to be ok but now crap. Maybe made in Thailand now.

I smoke Marlboro.
The ones you buy in Thailand are made by Philip Morris in the Philippines.
The ones you buy in Laos are made 'under licence' in Vietnam.
The ones in the UK used to be made there, but I guess they are probably made in Eastern Europe by now as the UK no longer manufactures anything!!!
However they all taste completely different to each other which I guess is the general consensus.

I think I will tell the Thai man to bog off, seems he was probably trying to get me to give him the cigarettes for free by saying they were fake.
Agree Jack, but at the moment prefer to die with lung cancer or liver failure than cutting my wrists because my TW has used up all my savings.LOL

Last time I was in Bangkok I smoked Red L+M - tasted the same as the ones I'd smoked 6 months before in Tenerife. My UK brand is Lambert and Butler.

How much approx is a carton of 200 cigs in Udon from local stores or Tesco Lotus?

Marlboro 62 baht a packet most places, I haven't tried carton buying them in Lotus though.
Rob on the way back to UK the duty free at 'swampy' isn't a great deal cheaper. From memory it was over 500 baht for a carton at Christmas. It would almost be easier to buy a carton at Lotus & pack it in your case to take back with you. :D

Occasionally, when my wife goes to Vientiane, she picks me up a few packs of Marlboro Lights, 35 baht per pack. She buys them at talat Sau(sp?).
From the side of the package:
"Made under authority of Phillip Morris Products S.A.
Neutachel, Switzerland".
UPC code: 288692
Also written on side of package: "U.S. Tax Exempt For Use Outside U.S."
These are not the same ones being sold at the border.
She said they also have L&M's and other brands at this market.

Jingjai, is that the market in the centre of Vientiane???

If so I have bought from there in the past, a very pleasant lady & she charged me even less than the duty free shops for a carton - but I never looked where they were made, just assumed it would be Vietnam too...
