Well, that's it then, I'm retiring to somewhere safer, cleaner and nicer. No, not Myanmar but England or maybe Brechin, Scotland.

Realising that I had not made a comment, I would add that initially like many of us I expect it was the draw of the Lax laws and the availabilty of many things hither to not really available in our own countries , as time progressed, I came to the conclusion that it is the weather mainly, I can deal with the heat by either A/C when too hot or fans of almost any description that keeps it comfortable. The garden although sometimes hard work, keeps me busy and reasonably fit, flowers 12 months of the year somewhere in it, constant looking and pruning and weeding, amazingly a pleasurable exercise. lastly now after 20 years, good food availability now at an acceptable level and very reasonable price compared to the UK , entrepreneurs abound offering delicacies and well cooked and made meals as well. Utility costs low.

All of your reasons and that the Thai caddies don't laugh at your golf shots the way a Scots caddie would do. Getting acclimatised now as well, 21oC on the 1st tee this morning at 8am and feeling chilly. Probably moaning my head of come April.

For me it would be Findhorn, Nairn, Ardersier, the Black Isle or pretty much anywhere in the "neuk" of the Moray Firth.

An honest answer..

The weather
Cost of living
Business opportunities
General life style
any members been to Scunthorpe ??

In the late 90s after a year out in between jobs n blowing some redundancy doe traveling the world which took in a chunk of the nice bits of Mexico ( Cancoon, Monterrey , Monclova) and contemplating residing there i came to Thailand purely by chance for a mates wedding, from then on was literally hooked returned a few times as a sleazy s e x tourist and from 2000 stayed perninently...its been home ever since.

As i got older my memory has faded as has my s e x tourism antics (now zero prefering a cornish pastie instead ) ..i recently renewed my drivers licenses upon which it states the date first applied for a Thai license .. henceforth twas confirmed my arrival to reside here was September 2000.

Im guessing ..ONLY GUESSING GUYS ..DONT SHOOT DONT SHOOT ..that a high percentage of guys arrived here to sample the wares on offer in Pattaya but back then the tag "" s e x tourist "" didnt hold the same sigma as it does today.

Main thing is despite many highs n lows its great to be here.

Safer, cleaner and nicer and England cannot be used in the same sentence. There are some loverly wee quaint villages and market towns in the south but you have to sell your children to be able to afford to live there. Scotland's North West is or would be heaven if it was not for the weather.

I like living here in Thailand. It is especially true since my home country, the USA, has been taken over by far left liberal socialists who are determined to destroy the country.

What?! AOC is already in charge? Tucker who? must have missed that one.

This som nam-nah moment is brought to you by the letter T and the number 45.

Meanwhile back on topic: apart from the incredibly young, stunningly beautiful and amazingly talented Mrs tam and our two strapping, handsome lads, since maybe 2008, most of my work is/was in the far east, Australia and NZ. I had the option to relocate closer to the Vietnam action but since I had previously lived the manic, exciting and hedonistic life of a FIFO in Pattaya (including a five-year marriage), I returned to Thailand as a single 50-something, renting the house I had sold to some other oilfield trash about a dozen years previously. I quickly noted that there was a whole lot of ostensibly lonely, beer drinking, 60-somethings already living there. Then I met Mrs tam and the rest as they say...

Defund the police? Make the police afraid to do their jobs?

Through just four months this year, nearly 100 police officers have been killed in the line of duty ... You won't likely see widespread demonstrations for these fallen officers. You won't see much outrage from the media mob either if they even report it. Aside from a few local reports, you probably won't even see their names anywhere. Instead, police face widespread vilification and harrassment and now defunding in nearly every major city in this country.

"What Stigma".

There is no stigma attached to visiting or living a life in, Pattaya, the way that you see fit, unless of course you are prone to worrying about what comes out the mouths of other Numpties. A lot of time the Numpty is critical, more out of jealousy. Jealous that they cannot live your choice of lifestyle. :drunk: :-({|=

My daft sister criticized my decision to retire to Thailand, for all the wrong reasons, along with saying why not come back to Australia, when she had never ever been to Thailand. I find this form of criticism of Thailand to be typical of some from Australian and New Zealand. :fryingpan:

in some respects pipoz i agree ..

Im sure when a guy has announced his intentions to move to Thailand either to retire or work n live it is followed by a head shake and raising of the eyebrows by some family members n friends .. my old landlady at my local pub said its just phase i was going thru after divorce and i would be back in 6 months skint n tail between legs .... for some that does happen for various reasons and circumstances .....alas for my sins im still here struggling on 21 years this September.

There still remains a stigma attached to emigrating here , usually in the heads of people who have never visited Thailand or those who have visited and been burnt or experienced a bad event or unpleasantness ... most head shakers only know what they read n hear in an often bias media about alleged reputations a location has for scams , road carnage and the crime rate etc... the people who get scammed are IMO some what to blame for allowing it to happen whether its a jet ski scratch , a dowry payment or buying ""the brother"" a truck or a botched plastic surgery holiday .. oh yesh gobbing off at a group of Thais leading to fistycuffs when really its best just to smile n move on in all cases.

Im sure many other nations other than Thailand heave dangers and scams .. time share in Spain , Deck chair mafia in Cleethorpes and ice cream van wars in Scotland

I too was told that retiring in Thailand was a mistake and that I would be back in the US within a year. My brother had a different opinion. He had R&R in Thailand during the Vietnam war. He grinned and said that knowing me, I would never come back to the US. He was right and the others were wrong.

Have a look at the deaths of officers so far in 2021. Lots of Covid deaths (seems to be about 2/3rds of all deaths), heart attacks, motor vehicle deaths etc, these far outweigh crime related deaths. So you term 'line of duty' should be reworded to 'on active duty'

https://www.odmp.org/search/year

Defunded? Let's not get carried away. The total amount re-allocated from police budgets is 0.84%. That money has been re-allocated to what are considered the drivers of crime like housing, drug rehabilitation programs etc. Over the past few decades, police budgets have grown enormously. Time will tell if this is going to effective, obviously police unions and 'law & order' proponents don't like it. However transferring 911 calls relating to mental health to health professionals seems to be a better option than having police deal with these issues, this is just one of many initiatives where redirected funds are being applied.
