Contentious, provocative opening post. You know how emotive the subject of pies can be. 😂
Even more so, given that Wellington is clearly a dish of French origin. 8)
Beef Wellington is a steak dish of English origin, made out of fillet steak coated with pâté (often pâté de foie gras) and duxelles, wrapped in puff pastry, then baked. Some recipes include wrapping the coated meat in a crêpe or parma ham to retain the moisture and prevent it from making the pastry soggy.

Just cannot give up Pratty can you.
Then there's Scottish Hogmanay Pie which is a steak pie slow cooked in an ashet without the bottom pastry case, just a large puff-pastry top.

Tam, would never have turned down a serving of this even with a bottom bit of pastry on the bottom, but to quote Dean its just a beef soup with pastry on top. For me a pie is something you can walk about with, to have either as a snack or main dish. Kinda like a Cornish Pasty, in the piece box for lunch doon the mines. Or maybe the French invented them as well.

"Beef Wellington is a steak dish of English origin, made " ....... with English ingredients?

Surely you are aware how "English" pâté (often pâté de foie gras) and duxelles is ?
And the typical English style crêpe or parma ham (from Parma, just a few hundred Km South of Portsmouth I think)
No one said 100% British ingredients, the pepper was probably from Asia, maybe the salt and other seasonings were from other shores. But invented in France?? Next it will be 007 is a Labour supporter.

Where does that originate from?

Nope not a pie ,faux pie complete with fake crimping. Why crimp when there's no bottom pastry ?

Google the images for Hogmanay Pie yourself. There's crimped and non-crimped versions. The image I chose was representative not indicative. The northeast butchers make them in disposable aluminium ashets.

I agree that for the pie purists, it's not by any definition a pie but they're bloody huge, easy to make and delicious.

You got it wrong
A pie has a pastry base, sides and top
It is not a wrap of pastry

Shepard's pie and cottage pie seem to fit into another category all together.

Yes they are a strange one. From what I understand they're called pies simply because the mash topping resembled a pie . also seems Scottish Shepard's pie can be made with pastry. Now that's something I didn't know
