Longest serving EX-Pat Residents (Brits.)in Udon Thani
Chewing the fat over a cold ale with a friend we got to reminiscing on "the good old days" as you do? Between us we have over 50 years living here so we got to wondering who the Longest serving EX-Pat Residents (Brits.)are? I arrived here in Thailand in the late 1970's,to work in the Seismic industry. We bought a place in Soi Pracharsanti and married at the Amphoe Office in1983. I made Udon my base in Asia as I worrked in Bangladesh, Burma, Vietnam and Indonesia the work leave ratio being 6 on 6 off spending my R & R in Udon naturally. My travels ended in 1995, however as we will be celebrating our Rubanniversary in 2 years time I consider my self a 38year resident of this great Metropolis at this time, ANY OTHERS OUT THERE of similar vintage?

Wow. I just came across this post. I think it would be very interesting to chat with an old timer such as goodison.

Me, 26 years in Thailand. Been through many wives, lost my hard working money to them....Yes I can hear
"Som Nam Nah"! Been through hell and back, almost murdered. In a fatal car crash Been beaten up,
Even been on Thai TV. (Yes KP not only you)
Still survived. Will pop me clogs here, 80 years old and no major health issues.
Best memories was the "Meet up night market" .
With BKK Stan and his poodle peeing on the table !
Good times!

Good times!
Stan was allowed to bring his poodle
Certain members were allowed to attend by their Thai wives (as long as they came too)
Night market provided good cheap food
Beer was cheaper than in most bars
Those of us that wanted the footie could watch on the big screen
Wives could wander off shopping for an hour knowing their "man" was being looked after
Smokers and non smokers managed to sit where they didnt cause each other trouble, but could still converse
And then they banned smoking in the market, the 50%+ that smoked had to go to a special "smoking area" 50 metres away, they spent more time coming to or going to the area so tended to hang around there instead of going back and forth, and the whole experience crumbled. None of the later attempts to meet in this bar or that bar ever really took off as it was just seen as a few beers in a bar rather than a "meet up"

Never made it to the Market meet up, attended a meet up once, somewhere near to Don Bosco but thjat was a one off. These days so many more farangs here than in early years , more establishments dotted around the outer fringes , the need to collect as a group no longer deemed a necessity . people go where they want to meet up with like minded friends, be it for lunch, dinner or breakfast or even just coffee.

You have to remember, back in those days Udon map was in its infancy and was just used as an information site, where to buy this or that, where to go to get certain docs/info/papers, what new shop/bar/cafe was being opened etc etc rather than the chat, advertise and p*sstake portal it has morphed into.
Re: Longest serving EX-Pat Residents (Brits.)in Udon Thani
Exactly! Was, and still is a handy info site.stattointhailand wrote: ↑June 9, 2022, 11:01 amYou have to remember, back in those days Udon map was in its infancy and was just used as an information site, where to buy this or that, where to go to get certain docs/info/papers, what new shop/bar/cafe was being opened etc etc rather than the chat, advertise and p*sstake portal it has morphed into.
But unfortunately a few jokers and sad members spoil the fun
Which results in some members refraining to post for fear of "p*sstake portal "

Dont see what the problem is, you can be serious when dealing with problems/giving help where possible/giving and receiving advice/alerting people to problems, and still have a laugh/joke/pi**take when the serious stuff has been dealt with. Most posters on here seem to "hold fire" until a subject has been dealt with/answered before posting a sarky/tongue in cheek comment
