Only use True Pay as you Go Nick.
I do not use my phone for data via the phone network, only via wi-fi.
With a little for-thought I have found it easy enough to use even for things like navigation without the need to be constantly connected.
The data packages have always seemed rather expensive to me - world wide, not just Thailand. However at least in the UK they will throw in a phone for a pittance in compensation.

I've been an AIS customer for many years.......pre-paid, about 3 baht per minute but I rarely call, so it's no problem. My topups last a year before they expire. Now have a 3G package, 500mb for 299 a month, most always good connections esp. when in town.....and now sporting 4G in several locations around town. 4G 'appears' to be considerably faster than 3G......but I haven't done any real tests.
About 2 months ago, while swapping out my TOT router for a new one (free), I noticed an ad on the TOT desk that said (in Thai), if you subscribe to TOT hi-speed internet (at home), you can choose between receiving 100 hours of TOT wi-fi spots or 1GB of TOT 3G for free. I inquired.....and sure enough, for a mere 49 baht for a new sim (my phone has dual sims), I obtained a TOT 3G sim. I've tested out the TOT 3G (free because I'm a home ADSL customer) versus AIS 3G (299 month for 500mb).......I can't tell any difference......again, I didn't perform any speed tests so results might vary.
Better still, you can top up your TOT 3G sim at any 7-11 with calling minutes. A 1 minute phone call using the TOT 3G sim costs a mere 0.99 Baht, versus the 3 baht per minute on AIS.
I'll likely dump my AIS 3G package later next month and just use the TOT 3G. I prefer keeping my old AIS mobile number, so I'll probably continue to keep minutes on that SIM, but use my TOT 3G sim for most outgoing mobile calls.
It's getting better all the time!
Note: if you subscribe to the faster ADSL packages (16mbps or 20mbps) you receive 2GB of free 3G

I have a DTac post paid account - calls are 1.8baht/minute, and SMS 2 baht each.
I also have a data (3G) add-on for 99 baht/month, which gives 75MB of data. Just checked online, and they have (gratuitously) increased that to 100MB at no extra cost from next month , even though I have never got near using the 75MB.
It may also be interesting to know what mobile phone people have.
Mine is a Huawei G300+. Android, with tri-band 3G ie 850/900/2100, so can be used with any of the Thailand carriers.

Set up my mobile with AIS 3G iSMART package.Unlimited WIFI 750 MB with free 150 minute calls to all networks. I use Line for free video calls to the UK and works fine.Cost of the above package is 399 baht per month and was set up for my receiving monthly invoices which I then pay at AIS or at Telewiz outlets.Invoice is addressed to me so no need to register under Thai Wife/girlfriend.

I just bought a Lao Telecom (Huawei). It is very basic, and I got it to receive and make calls. It also gets some Lao FM radio stations. I have either 50,000 or 500,000 kip worth of calls. One baht=250 kip.jackspratt wrote:

It's a pay as you go sim card type of deal.
