running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
anyone doing this as i need advice about getting power down so i dont blow it to bits .need some rectification

Lazada has a decent selection of these small inverters. Connect the inverter to your battery and plug in your lap top. You can buy a 12 volt DC to 220 volt AC inverter for around 500 baht. You can check how many amps/watts your laptop uses by looking at the numbers on the power block. It doesn't take much power.
Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
You could use one of these, just need the correct dc plug for the input to the dc socket on the laptop.
Would need to be adjusted prior to connecting to get the correct voltage.
Most run at around 18 to 19V. Of course, goes without saying, check polarity. ...$6.00 plus a couple of plugs
Inverters above will be simpler if you have no prior electronics knowledge.

i found 1 similar with a digital display and USB socket output

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
Just be careful there.
USB sockets very rarely can drive the higher current needed for charging the laptop ( if that is what you were referring to)
The one I showed can supply up to 150W, the one you found may not.

My last laptop had a very weak battery, I got an adaptor which plugged into the cigarette lighter worked fine on 12v
Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
As you do not say what laptop or which "adaptor" then who are we to say if you are right or wrong.minimiglia wrote: ↑April 5, 2019, 6:45 amMy last laptop had a very weak battery, I got an adaptor which plugged into the cigarette lighter worked fine on 12v
Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
after lieing idle for 2 years the battery still has 12.1 volts in it with just a trickle charge needed to top up a bit .not enough to start the motor though

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
Assume you are referring to the car battery.
This may well be 12.1V BUT this PD will drop rapidly once any load is connected as you have already experienced with the starter. Batteries left idle like this will sulphate up around the plates rendering the battery (mostly) permanently knackered.

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
Since the grid here is down so often, I just ordered an automatic small trickle charger and spent a little more for a 300 watt inverter to run my second security camera system located on the garage. The two WiFi cameras will run 24/7 off the car battery. The 2 amp trickle charger will keep the battery topped up for when the grid is down. The inverter is bigger than really needed but I have found that oversize inverters run cooler and hold up much better than smaller ones.
My main camera system for the house is cable powered and runs 24/7 off my solar system battery bank. I considered running a 220 volt cable from the house inverter to the garage but this way is much easier. The weak point is the old car battery. The little charger has a volt meter built in so I will be able to see at a glance the condition of the battery. Total cost excluding the battery was $38. The little 300 watt inverter is also pure sine wave. (more expensive).

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
yeah, they dont make 12v laptops, but as said above, you can power your 240v laptop using a 300watt inverter which is plugged into your car cigarette lighter socket..
my house is 12v solar so I use a 300w inverter to run my laptop..
remember the power itself comes from the battery, not the inverter, so you may need to start your engine before you run your car battery flat..my house has a 12v meter so I can glance at it to let me know when enough is enough..

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
The little boost converter I referred to has a fairly high efficiency (90-95%) which would be lost to a degree by first driving a dc to ac inverter to 220V AC and then driving the laptop power supply back down again to around the DC18V mark.
Whatever floats your boat........

Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
Since my garage camera system needs so little power, I haven't worried about efficiency. No doubt the way I have planned it will not be efficient. A few extra baht a month is not very important.

I just looked at the power block for my lap top. It puts out 19 volts.bluejets wrote: ↑April 4, 2019, 11:43 amYou could use one of these, just need the correct dc plug for the input to the dc socket on the laptop.

mine is 14v
Re: running laptop from a 12 v car battery ?
I use the OEM power block anyways. It works fine plugged into my inverter if needed.
