How to stay safe while in Thailand? Tips please

Post by travelerjax04 » January 23, 2018, 6:54 am

I’m travelling to Thailand in three weeks for a romance tour. I’ve heard friends giving me warnings to take care of myself while staying there. They said it’s a nice place but it’s still my first time visiting Asia so I should be careful. Now, I need tips on how to stay safe while in the country.

Are there particular things that I should be aware of? What are the common negative things that happen to tourists there that I might encounter? I need to know this ahead because I don’t want something bad to happen to me while in there.

I’ve already read some blogs and other posts about their experience. It was a mix of good and bad reviews. I need other details though that I have to keep in mind. Is there any guide someone can recommend to me? I need more information. I only have three weeks left to prepare.

If you do not consider yourself 'streetwise' then sorry to say Thailand is not the place for you.

I have felt safer in Thailand than anywhere else in the world. That said, it is still wise to use your street smarts and trust your gut instincts. Stupidity and poor judgment will get you into trouble here as fast as anywhere else.

My only warning is to be wary of the falang pirates in Pattaya. Many foreigners there are on the run from something or someone. If you consider yourself to be a good, honest person, be wary of any foreigner trying hard to be your friend.

Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

A "romance tour" will undoubtedly be escorted. Presumably you're paying over the raw cost for hotels, etc., for the services of experienced trip management and leaders who know what's going on.

That's really good advice, and I'll keep that in mind, thanks so much!

*Don't drink..and drive.
*CHECK YOUR INSURANCE COVER..Make sure it includes everything that is EXLUDED.
*Use Comdom at ALL times(not joking)
*Check that you have all the top-ups regarding vaccine.
*Use comon sence..if things sounds to good to be true..it usually is.

I personally think drinking alhohol is the biggest issue..so please don't drink..judgement get less and less by the drink.

Have an aswsome "romance tour"..and keep us posted ;-)

Like Dui said alcohol consumption can be a problem, so if you drink try to keep at a minimum and never judge the "Book by it's cover" and jump into a possible relationship to quick.

One of Thailands industries is extracting cash from foreigners and they are very good at it, some legal ways and some not. Basically if a Thai is trying to interact with you they are hunting for cash. The lengths and time some spend to get what they want is hard to believe. Just smile back, say no a lot and leave your money in the bank and you will have a good time and not go home broke or brokenhearted.

I am descended from Spanish smugglers and German mercenaries, and my maverick hotheaded blood has seen me tread many a backstreet in Old, and New Siam,(as well as other countries) like some ghost of Xmas past, where I have encountered the whole range of shady, and shifty characters from street con men to serial rapists and murders..I now use that experience to help families who's loved ones have died mysteriously is SE.Asia, and there is a constant flow of them these days..

your travel idea (romantic trip ) puts you behind the eight ball before you have even left your home country, because all sorts of shifty characters come with that industry, just like it would in USA or Europe..you can get your money ripped off while your pants are down, or worse, you can be thrown off a highrise balcony before you even see a Thai beaver, because a minder has followed you back to your love nest.

like a number of countries these days, locals dont like immigrants, or people who they see as changing their culture or country..people with money can be seen in that light..

Some things you can do, some you cant..

Keep a low profile. Dont stand out
be street smart if you can. It takes practice....
Dont throw your money around for a start,or wave your open wallet around
Dont wander around drunk or stoned
Dont leave your drink unattended, unless you want to end up hog tied naked in the jungle..
Dont go down dark unlit streets in places you dont know, as there are minders for gambling dens and the like..
Dont argue with anyone..walk away..
dont let yourself get outnumbered..
dont sleep on the ground floor
dont let your passport out of your sight..
dont drive unless you have been there awhile.
keep away from jetski's , offshore islands, and sea snakes..
respect the govt and royal family..

Keep off the booze.
And as other have mentioned utilise your "street smarts".If you don't have any study up.
Smile,relax and enjoy.
It is a beautiful country full of beautiful ladies.
I hope you find what you are looking for.
Good luck.

+1 all above

...and never, ever, ever, ever "put your hands on" a Thai, engage in a stare-down with a Thai, or talk back to or otherwise humiliate an authority figure. These things will not end well for you.

Lastly, suspect most those you are expected to trust the most. In your case, that would be your Romance Tour minders.

And really lastly, expect it to take at least 2 years to NOT be a Padawan with respect to "knowing the ropes" no matter how prepared or knowledgeable you THINK you are.

I should have added
have some respect for the woman you do share intimate parts with.
A lot of them dont choose the life they lead, life itself, and circumstances, have put them where they are. So dont look down on them as some men are want to do.

Invest in a tazer, several canisters of pepper spray, and a large caliber handgun immediately upon arrival. Set booby traps around your room and in your vehicle. Stay vigilant.
