wines in restaurants

Post by pompui » March 3, 2008, 2:23 am

Can anyone suggest any restaurants in Udon that have a good wine selection?
Want to have a few days off my regular leos/tiger and onto a decent wine with my meal. But have standards, none of the blue nun or liebfraumilch!
Maybe that has just removed Dieters from my list of restaurants but any guidance would be appreciated.
If none, then will buy the wine at tesco/big c and pay corkage?

Sizzlers on the top floor of the Charoensri complex has a reasonable wine selection and a damn good salad bar.

I think that the salad bar at Sizzlers is by far the best in Udon.
In contrast to their cooked meals which are bland & unappetising........strange :?

Their salad bar is their saving grace... For me it holds the record for the meanest portion I've ever been served. I had Malibu chicken and it came with 7 French fries.

I quite enjoy their meals, but the selection at the salad bar is a meal in itself.

The worst wine I've ever tasted is a Thai wine called Monsoon Valley, tasted like having a mouthfull of water with rusty nails in it.

Lee,
A top tip to get more salad on your plate.
Take the prong from a box of dates, mount it on the middle of the plate with a jerk of plasticine. You can then dress your prong with more tomatoes, onion rings, lettuce, leaving more room around the edge to build a large mountain of salad.

I think most restaurants will allow you to bring a bottle in?

ok this is nothing to do with wine, now the sizzler salad bar is not only the best in udon but must rank as one of the best in thailand.for price..freshness...choice...eat as mutt as you like, all tasting great, the soups, pastas, desserts, the dressings etc....food is ok, certainly had more than 7 chips, maybe some fell off the plate on their way to your table IA.

it amazes me when i watch some people pile the salad bar 3 foot high on their plate....they do know you can go back and get more, and more and more...or maybe they don't.
Can You Dig It Dug.?

Yep, I agree with (almost) everything said about SIZZLERS...(with all the salad I ate I couldnt eat many more than 7 chips anyway!, LOL) It was our favourite place while we were in Udon last month. The salad did me fine and yes, I must have been the one you saw BM with my plate piled high even though I knew I could go back for more. Good tip about that date stick, I'll save mine up for when we are over again

:D
Sounds as if I will buy my own wine and take it to restaurants, probably no corkage charges here in Udon yet but why do the Thais drink red wine with ice, probably hides a bad wine well.
Thanks Lee about sizzlers having a wine selection,no mention from anyone about any restaurant here that has a separate wine list when the menu arrives at the table.

Rabiang Phatchani has normally got a fair wine list in the past, and the food is very good!
Well worth a try on your next night out!

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine... and those who don't ...
As Ben Franklin said: In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.
In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces.
In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor)because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.
Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health
Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shi*t.
There is no need to thank me for this valuable
information: I'm doing it as a public service
Cheers!

Jingjai, can you recomend any good Thai Reds you have come across ?? about three years ago a friend of mine pulled a two litre bottle with a handle on the side that was quite nice, if not a little sweet. It came from Chiangrai I think but cant remember the name of it.!!
