Remembrance Sunday

Post by SideshowBob » November 1, 2010, 2:47 pm

Sunday 14th November there are services in the UK for Remembrance Sunday for our fallen during the wars fought by British and commonwealth servicemen over the years.

I will be in Udon on the 14th and would like to pay my respects by attending a remembrance service.

Does anybody know if any churches will be doing this?

Thanks

Colin

Doesn't look like there will be anything on in Udon to commemorate the occasion Bob . There is a ceremony taking place in the War Cemetery on Saeng Shuto road in Kanchanaburi but I don't believe the British Ambassador will be in attendance this year as they are having a separate service in Bangkok .I will be there but I think this year we will not have any actual survivors of the Death Railway present .The few left , are of course now , getting on a bit after all .
You might be interested to know the parade at the Cenotaph in Whitehall this year will be lead by The British Korean Veterans association as it commemorates their 60th anniversary.
On a separate note but possibly of interest to any old soldiers out there .The Chelsea Pensioners have today released a CD album of nostalgic songs to help raise funds for modernisation of the 300 year old Chelsea Hospital which is of course an institution dedicated to the welfare of retired military men from all three services .

An appropiate story for remembrance week .

Which reminds us all of the huge debt of gratitude we owe to all our allies at this time. I know our Commonwealth and American friends have their own day of rememberance but you will be in our thoughts on this, the day, we choose to commerate the sacrifices made by the young men of the time .Thanks Guy's . You paid the ultimate price so that we could be free .RIP.

11.11.11.1918. Remembrance Day in Udon Thani.

Post by Sport » November 9, 2010, 9:28 am

It is hard for me to grasp the fact that WW1 started 96 years ago, (I'm in my very late 50's) and it seems not too long ago I could see WW1 veterans marching down the street. I do not think there are any veterans from that war still around today, I will not forget them.

This Thursday at our bar in Nutty Park, we will be having a few minutes of silence at 11am and afterwards a cup of tea, coffee and a few biscuits. A little shrine will be set up outside the bar and if anyone wishes too pay their respects, you will be made welcome, this is the least I can do. Its not a money making day for me, it is to say thanks and remember the past. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks

Three pictures that vividly illustrate our Great country as it is today.

Trubrit,

Great photos which truly illustrate not just how life in Britain is but life in most westernised countries nowadays!

Hero's welcome for soldiers returning from Afghanistan
http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/5 ... __welcome/

A newspaper report from 26th March 2010 concerning 10 Field Squadron Royal Engineers returning home through Northallerton High Street, in North Yorkshire.
The few pictures & video clearly show that a few militant extremists do not always have the upper hand & that the UK is not always quite like some people would wish to paint it..

Yes Bob . That's how it always was and still should be . Fortunately for Northallerton it is not a bed of muslim extremists or a place that would attract worldwide publicity, hence no press there . The photos of the animals baying I posted were as near to the Nations symbol of our gratitude to the fallen, The Cenotaph, as they could get by law. Therefore lots of press, lots of photos and maximum exposure all around the world . Yes there were also lots of photos of our old soldiers, many of whom had fought alongside and lost ,comrades being remembered. That's how it should be. That's the Britain I know and still love. The point I was hoping the photos would make, which I thought was obvious, was that these people come here and enjoy the freedoms our old soldiers fought for, then use and abuse those very same freedoms to deride our brave fighting men and at the same time put two fingers up at us , the native population, many of whom lost loved ones obtaining that freedom, with complete impunity, indeed aided and abetted by the very people whose job it is to uphold the law, the police .Indeed they are even seen arresting a Brit who happened to express, what many of us feel in our hearts, rather than the instigators of this disgusting display .Further photos showed the police escorting them safely back to the tube station to protect them from the wraith of ordinary citizens who were incensed by actions of these evil animals .
That's the Britain I see. If it is not stopped, then its London today, Northallerton or where ever tomorrow .That's the picture I am attempting to paint .

TB it is not quite true to say it was "ordinary citizens" who were arrested for righteous actions against the extremists. They were a gang of right wing extremists who had gone there specifically to fight. I will agree that the police were put in an invidious position, BUT the right to peacefully express an opinion has always been one of the mainstays of the Britain I am proud to be from.
While I do not necessarily agree with what the Muslim extremists were saying they absolutely have a right to peacefully (if loudly) say it & not be attacked by a group that believe the colour of persons skin shows the person inside.
When people are allowed to be attacked just for expressing a view not held by the majority then Britain is indeed on the slippery slope to ruin...

Not much I can say to that then except you are a lot younger than me and your the one who will have to live with it . Good luck, think you'll be needing it . :-"

I think I'll be watching the Remembrance day service on BBC TV. I lost my Dad recently, who always used to watch it. He took part in the D-Day landings and the European offensive up to VE day.

TB - What a great sentiment to express. Thanks for that. I think too often people on both sides of the Atlantic forget the sacrifices made by Britian, the Commonwealth and the U.S. and the bonds formed by those countries over the past century.

Sorry to learn of your recent bereavement Arjay. If your watching don't forget the clocks have altered and its now 7 hours different .I will be at the War Cemetry in Kanchanaburi in the morning and hopefully will be able to catch the Cenotaph ceremony at 6pm local time in my hotel room .

[-o< With respect to those from the Commonwealth, USA and all their past and present Allies, who have fought, and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in recent and historical conflicts throughout the world.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them".

Sunset Vigil
The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We’ve all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who’s set to fly

The eulogy’s read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO’s done
What kind of soldier they’d become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute’s silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

I just finished reading a book by the great author 'Thomas Keneally', titled 'The duaghters from Mars'. The characters are fictional, the locations etc are based on fact, it is based on two Australian sisters who serve as nurses commencing in Gallipoli and then onto France, it is a great story and a history lesson, those that enjoy reading will find the authors style very entertaining.'

Well four years on since you wrote the above Bob. Wonder if you still feel the same with the latest news that the police have arrested four animals that were, according to reports, planning to assassinate our Queen at this years Cenotaph ceremony.Should they succeed in harming her or any beloved member of her family you will witness an explosion of anti immigrant feeling beyond our wildest imagination. Lets sincerely hope for her safety and that of the many true and respectful onlookers, some of which will be immigrant muslims, not that the terrorists will care , that they are allowed to show their respect and gratitude to all who made the ultimate sacrifice. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

My feelings are still exactly the same TB.
I am absolutely against extremism in any form & physical violence in general.
Sadly the extremists on both sides of the fence make the headlines for media outlets who are equally happy to exploit them for their own ends.

Remembrance Sunday, for me at least, is about remembering the sacrifices of others to try & ensure a better world for all.

Let me express my gratitude for all those from England, the commonwealth and all allies that have sacrificed so much. Like our Veteran's Day coming up the 11th I hope that someday we will all be able to remember our comrades in peace.

I also think it's important amongst these remembrances for the historians to again chew over WW I even if some or much of what they dig up and present to the public isn't palatable.

I don't like WW I or any war being overly sanitized. While we can salute the participants from both sides in WW I we also need to learn how to make such catastrophes less likely to occur again. I hope these annual remembrances contribute to that outcome. I fear they don't if we lose sight of just how appalling WW I was. I don't think those who died would want us white-washing this disaster.
