Ramasun vets might be interested in the photos toward the top of the page at
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... &page=2585
The Thai at the top of the first photo (with the bikes) says:
"American radar center, Ramasum Base, from the Vietnam War days. There are plans to develop the area into a tourist attraction sometime in the future"

not much left of the old FLR-9 Circularly Disposed antenna Array (CDAA) other than the Zone A monopoles. I imagine all the rest of the FLR-9 was disassembled for copper and metal some time in the early 80's... the link shows the bicyclist walking their bikes down to the old central cable/switching building, now gutted, back 40 ought years ago called the "roundhouse".. As for making it a tourist attraction, what are they going to do, show the old cable tunnel that went from operations to the roundhouse and claim its the entrance to as much as 10 kilometers of underground tunnel?? That claim was main by a Thai military officer some time last year which Parrot posted...

Thanx for the quick reply. I guess ASA was eliminated in the latter 70's early 80's. Often think about that life over there. Sometimes wish it was like that more often. When we returned stateside, we brought a Thai individual with us. His first observation was "Who killed all the trees?" LOL. He never saw a winter scene of bare trees! He became an outstanding citizen over here, and I've been guilty of not staying up-to-date with him! I always thought that someday I would return to the area, but never had the opportunity. I spent 18 months there and loved every minute of it. I see you're listed as living there! While over there and working the MARS station, I was always thinking that we were 12 hours apart from my home time and a day ahead!

there are a few Ramasun alumnae I know of living over here.. Two other O5H's besides me, a former MP, and an AFSS guy who lives a ways out of the city and farms... There are probably others here too, perhaps not in this forum and perhaps some that never got into the internet thing... I'm in contact with a number of other old Ramasun guys Stateside who are on the Ramasun Station or 7th RRFS Facebook pages. Some, particularly those married to Thais do say they'd like to "retire" over here but generally family links with kids and grandkids prevent that.. Others visit occasionally.. The land across the street from our place is owned by the Thai wife of a former Ramasun 98C who lives down in Florida...

Hi

I was stationed at the 7th RRFS in July of 1973. Made my way from Edzell, Scotland via a commercial flight carrying a diplomatic passport. Was part of the Naval Security Group. Worked at the ops bldg at the 7th.
Have many great memories of my time there and some not so good.
Been trying to look up some buddies I was there with, Paul Emge, Bill Mehl werea couple of them.
Hope to hear back from those who spent time at the 7th, especially if part of the crew that worked in the ops bldg with its Flare 9.
Take care

Phil T

Paul Emge appears to be on Facebook.. He's got a bunch of photos post of Asmara (Kagnew Station) so I figure he's got to be connected with the Intel community back then. He lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. https://www.facebook.com/fairlycrazy23?fref=ts

Bill Mehl is also on FB. fits the age bracket based on his pictures but no other links showing he's NSG, AFSS or ASA back in the day...

Good day to all. I am a young veteran of the OIF 1 and 2, but currently am married to my beautiful wife in Udon and will be going home on vacation there in October and would honestly like to take one of you out for some drinks and just talk about Udon from back in the late 60's early 70's and also some stories if you wouldn't mind. Drinks on me of course. I grew up there in the 80's and 90's for about 8 years, Bangkok, Surin, Udon, Chaiyaphum. I've never spoken to any Americans there and would like to meet some in Udon. Thank you.

[email protected] is my e-mail if you wouldn't mind giving this young pup a history lesson or two.

Looking back, it seems that recruiters would promise anything when someone qualified for ASA. I am sure that, when I DEPed, Ramasun was on the closing list already but, since it was still open and functioning as a Field Station, orders could be cut.

But, while at Misawa, I grabbed a hop to Clark for a few days and wish I had gone there instead of Japan. :-)

My roommate in Misawa had done a tour at Ramasun right after AIT. He left Thailand, did a year Embassy duty in Tehran, then to Misawa. His name was Ray Hiatt if anyone knows him. He was there in 74/75 time frame. I remember one if his stories about a woman they called "2 baht Annie". ring a bell with anyone?
Hello I was stationed at Misawa from April 1978 until December 1980. Ray Hiatt was an asst trick chief when I was there. He was a staff sgt. Others I remember from Misawa are Ray Baker, Roger Mannon. few others who's names I can't remember right now.

the "2 Baht Annie" your friend referred to was the deaf/dumb girl who would accost guys when they went to the bathroom at Paradise Pool.. The word from way back is some missionary got her to clean up, got her educated and she went to the States eventually...

I knew Ray Hiatt well when were stationed together at the 7th and also back at Ft. Meade. We hung together quite a bit, played softball, pool, etc. -he could really shoot some pool! I haven't been able to find him on the net, so if you hear from him tell him Hello, from John Deahl, and that I've found Rod Green (in Colorado). thanks, and good luck.

Hey guys, I was stationed in Udorn (7th RRFS) Ramasan Station 1975 thru the time it closed around June 1976. I was a company clerk for Headquarters Company. I remember First Sergeant Atterberry and a few other fellows. For a young 20 year old, I remember the village outside the Main Gate. I still have many of the wooden carvings I brought back from over there.

I have been planning a trip back to Thailand for several years now (bucket list thing). I am now fully retired so I booked a flight to the LOS on 3 May to BKK and will return to the land of the big PX on 29 May. Will do an obligatory 6 days in Bangkok and will then fly up to Udon Thani. Looking forward to this part of the trip, hope to get close to the old 7th RRFS and take a few pics if I can. Got to thank Al Gore for creating the internet, there is so much to see. My only solid places to visit is BKK and Udon but have Chang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya Beach as other places to visit. There was a city I have been racking my brains to remember. I had to transport a prisoner from the 7th to the Army brig down south. The prisoner was a hog and decided he no longer wanted to do the job. For the life of me can't remember the place the jail was located (we flew to an Air Force base). If anyone can recall the name of the place let me know, might want to visit that place also (not the prison - the city). If there are any Ramasun Refugees still in Udon PM me if you can, maybe we can meet up and toss a few cold ones and tell some old stories.

The most southern USAF base in Thailand was UTAPAO if memory serves me right. I was TDY there for 55 days in 1971. It is a Thai navy base and has an international airport now.

Thanks ladda for the update on Udon and info provided. Checked the web page u provided, it was neat just looking at the old pics of the site. Still looking fwd to my trip there. From Trip Advisor to YOUTUBE, definately shows the city is not as I recall from the early 70s, but still looks great to me.

RockyRoc, you may be thinking about Camp Samae San, another ASA, NSA, AFSS, XXX, etc. post near Utapao RTAFB and Sattahip Naval Base. It would be very easy to transport your prisoner from Utapao to Camp Samae San. I never went there so I don't know if they had a brig. Most Americans and even the GIs in Thailand didn't know about Samae San or it's mission(s). Likewise the huge USMC airbase in the middle of Thailand (wink, wink).

Loong Lee, the only affiliation I know of that Camp Samae San had with ASA was that a number of buddies of mine who married Thais and who got booted from ASA ended up stationed there. I've never seen any reference to any intel missions out of there. It was a relatively small post and may have had an Army stockade or perhaps Rocky was escorting a guy down for Drug Rehab who'd pissed hot at Ramasun for Heroin use... As I recall USARSUPTHAI was headquartered there along with logistics and transportation elements.

As for the Nam Phong "Rose Garden" USMC Air Wing presence, it wasn't hidden, the Marines would get weekend passes and would get bused up to Udon since according to legend the Mayor of Khon Kaen only 40 kilometers or so away banned them. The base originally was built by the Agency to support its Lao operations but as things grew more open they moved up to Udorn RTAFB since it was nearly 100km closer to the action than Nam Phong. The Marines were there approx 71-mid 73. The Nam Phong strip still exists today, a 10,000 foot airfield with parking aprons used for training by the Singaporean AF and Thai AF..

FrazeeDK, I'm going to take your word for it. As I stated, I was never there, and only got any info I may (!) remember from almost 50 years ago, and that was from fellow Intell types of various AFSC's and MOS's.
And as far as Nam Phong (Good memory!) goes, I didn't say it was hidden, only not known by the majority of GI's and Americans in general. And I was aware that it still exists,,,,, pretty bare-base though.
Thanks for your service GI. I yawned and the last 50 years just disappeared. I don't know where it went.
