One of the many reasons i am looking forward to moving to Thailand is the lower number of rules and regs and the lower enforcement!! In return and to show my personal absurdity, this is me entertaining my staff on a typical Saturday night last weekend. I have blacked out my face because (a) it was fun to do it and (b) I cant stand the thought of anyone getting over stimulated!!

the absurdity of thailand ? , well i love it ,i would not call it absurd but rather different ..
i have been here now 16 years with leaving the country 4 times to go to my homeland in europe , recently because of the funeral my mother ,the first day we arrive i (we ,also my wife)am all ready struck by the absurdity of europe (and its not only in europe) where i am not feeling at ease at all ,better said feel like a bird in a cage or a dog on the leash ...must be like this, must do like this too much ...ridiculous expensive all,no freedom what so ever ...this is no place anymore where we want to spend the rest of our life , so we where relieved when we touched thailand soil again , where it is not perfect too , but i have learned to adapt to all the good and bad and even start thinking the thais way as like i said before this is my home now and i am not missing anything anymore from my home country,and i did not move to thailand to try to reform thais culture to be absurd and restraint as our western culture...so many complainers here? , if you are not sabay or happy here why not go back to your save haven abroad, without absurdity? instead of staying in a country you can not adapt and are eating your heart out (according to some postings? ) ...
so we prefer the absurdity of thailand over anything else ...
and your conception of absurdity will not be same as the thais conception ,
maybe what seems absurd to you is a way of life here and not absurd at all ,
once you realize this you will be more happy ...maybe
bottom line ..try to enjoy your short life , you only get one ....

God morning dear UM readers from a lovley morning weather were i've been sitting outside with my 2 dogs haveing my morning coffee..

I've just starting to accept things the "Thai way",slowly VERY slowly adapting.Haven't been home once (Sweden) since i left 15 years ago.It's been ups and downs,frustations and moore..and when i start my negative ramblings about Thailand my wife steps in,thank God..you want to stay,do you still love me and my country??..Stop jepping and get your sh** togheter OR GO HOME..okey..
And i stay,i will try harder to adapt..and i found that learning the language is the KEY,i speak faaar from fluent but i just learnt by listening,no school..and it works most of the time..and it really helps ALOT.When you can diffuse yourself and Thais when haveing an "argument"..joking in Thai language is really a "asset"..both for me and the Thais.Not foolproof in any way,but it really helps alot.

I always and still suffer from my hot temper,but the 15 years here have helped me to "harnest"that somewhath,because we all now that Thais don't like confrontations,may it be verbal or..So for that i'm thankful..jai jen will prevail

So i guess i will stay here until my wife either kick my butt and tell me to "go home",or i choose to accept the Thai way things are done.

But ONE thing i realy HATE is that i can't trust the LEGAL SYSTEM here,that includes the Immigration and Police here,the corruption and one lawbook for the rich and one for the poor..can't swallow that at all.

Thanks for starting this thread,makes me humble to both read and write how other Farangs feel how they try their best to "fit in"amongst the Thais.

Agree completely.

Too many Elitist Expats who fail to see the problems in their home countries -- or they wouldn't be here. I'm still offering free rides to the airport if what you think is "absurd" gets too difficult to handle.

It is funny how a comical post about a single absurd observation in Thailand as opposed to what you may observe in a first world country and its strict rules, can suddenly fly off into the cosmos by some taking things far to serious about others loving , hating or whatever else about living in Thailand.
My first and only thoughts on the post to me is how silly or absurd the girl may look in her parasol hat.
The fact she is doing it without a care in the world and no thought for her well being if she fell off is absurd, but, that's the unique beauty of Thailand. They don't give a hoot what people think.

I do indeed find it interesting that people who go back to their home country to be among normal people end up back here in Thailand. I certainly wouldn't live anywhere that I hated. Thailand is a great place to retire provided that you have enough money to comfortably live out your remaining days.

Sometimes it is a fatal mistake to try to get rich here. It is not a good place to live if you are broke.

Well I must ask , what are normal people ? I have been here over 30 years now and it certainly wouldn't be normal for me to live in an area where most of my neighbours were of foreign extraction, nor to send a kid to school and find they were a minority among their class mates, guess that makes me abnormal? However I strongly agree with the last remark, whilst in the early years here I did a bit of importing and exporting, mainly to keep myself occupied, I have never considered trying to make a living here and from what I see, not many do so successfully , but it is a great place to retire.
