A Bit OTT, but common enough 50 years ago. i remember seeing fellow students picked up by their ears (lifted off the ground) and being beaten with the back edge of a claymore sword. Canings also occurred weekly (but no phones to take photos in those days). Maybe no-one got so serious injuries, but frightening enough.

I havent seen the full story but what did the student do to deserve his beating ?? i did see another story ref a teacher in BKK who threw a chalkboard eraser at a student injuring his eye the lads parents seemed to be on the cash wagon in this case IMO.
When i was at school many moons ago the cane was in daily use and excepted OBVIUOSLY not onmy my young tender bottom cos i was a model student !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very strong discipline for the students but no discipline for the teachers? Teaching in shorts? At a catholic private school? The (only) one I know, in Sawan daendin, has very strict dress codes, also for the teachers.
In my remote Isan village the teachers (government school) have a dress code. All female teachers wear black skirts or black long trousers and all male teachers black LONG trousers. The shirts colour depends on the day.

This guy doesn't look like a teacher at a catholic private school. He might be teaching martial arts....

His behaviour (if not a set up) is disqualifying. I wonder if he is caning female students too?

I must admit that I'm sometimes wondered why teachers need a demonstration of power. In my village the students come together around 3.30 pm, sit on the ground in groups and the teachers (in turn) make a speech to them. ALL the male teachers carry a stick (piece of wood)... why? They point at students and I find it provoking and an act of aggression. They not hit the students but why can't they teach without the use of a stick (like the female teachers can )
Maybe one of our expat teachers can answer this psychological phenomenon?

I think the facts as reported on Thai news indicate he wasn't actually a teacher . Apparently this school has boarding pupils and he was employed to supervise the house in which they lived after school lessons. Part of his job was to keep the area clean and tidy, this the youths (15 year olds ) had refused to do. On the day in question the bins hadn't been emptied and rubbish was strewn every where. He asked a female teacher how he could control them and it was her suggestion he caned them .Now I know this doesn't excuse the violence, but I think we have all had that feeling of wanting to give a mouthy kid a good clip round the ear, so I certainly can sympathise with him .You might also consider why they had mobile phones in the classroom in any case .It would appear to be symptomatic of today's namby pamby society, where unruly kids can not be disciplined and can do what they like. Anyone who tries falls foul and as in this case no doubt, losses his job . :-"

If the part (I) underlined is true, the guy deserves serious jail time. Even if it is not true, sacking is the very least he deserves.

I taught at Santa Cruz Suksa in BKK (Catholic) and out of four schools, two of them being the most prestigious in BKK and maybe Thailand they were the most spoiled brats I have ever encountered in Thailand. No kind of non psycial discipline worked. I quit after 3 months and the pay was very good and I was the head teacher in the falang Dept. I can see the frustration that might occur with the teacher. That being said, I don't condone corporal punishment. It was still in use when I was in school and misused by teachers. Minor infractions were sent to the dean and swats administered.
The dean had a razor strap bolted to a cut off ping pong (table tennis) paddle and you bent over and grabbed your ankles. He could really wind up like it was the tee off at the course! This was in middle school. Maybe it was practice for him?

We have all wanted to clip round the ear a mouhty Kid, but a clip round the ear and a beating are two different things. What would you do if it were your Kids that were being cained? Myself Id give the teacher a taste of his own medicine. If my kids need disiplining Im the one to do it, nobody else!
