Additional Holidays

Post by stattointhailand » January 4, 2021, 5:34 pm

Does anyone know how they plan to organise the "additional" holidays that have just been announced?

The 4 "National" holidays is not a problem, but how are the "Regional" holidays going to work?

Do you take the NE day off if you work in NE whilst the others work?
What if you LIVE in NE but work in N or Central, which one is "your" holiday?

First thoughts were they were giving everyone the day off, but then that would make them "National" holidays and no different to the other 4 days so that cant be the case or they would have just added 8 extra "National" holidays.

National Holidays

• Friday, February 12 for the Chinese New Year

• Monday, April 12, Songkran holiday extended from April 12-15

• Tuesday, July 27 for substitution day for Buddhist Lent

• Friday, September 24 to celebrate Mahidol Day which is in remembrance of Prince of Songkhla

Regional Holidays

Friday, March 26 for Wai Phra That (Northern Thailand)

Monday, May 10 for บุญบั่งไฟ, known as the Rocket Festival (Northeastern Thailand)

Wednesday, October 6 for Sart Thai, a festival held on the 10th lunar month (Southern Thailand)

Thursday, October 21 for the End of Buddhist Lent (Central Thailand)

Maybe they are making the regional Holidays listed above as Observances, not national as so many are

Has anyone managed to work this out yet?
Is tomorrow a holiday or not?
What's open/closed?
Surely not even in Thailand would they have a holiday in some places but not others (but TIT)

I know of three Udon businesses that will be taking a holiday tomorrow. When the government set these four extra holidays up, they were supposed to be regional and tomorrow's Wat Phra Thai is the first one designated for the north, ie. Chiang Mai. The Isaan one is on 10th May so I bet they'll take that one as well as the other couple.

That is what I thought at first,
Then I thought What is the idea of these extra days? To boost the economy of the Region?
Given there is NO International tourism, the only way to increase it is by Thais visiting and spending their money, so, if they are ALL at work how are they going to visit the other region to boost their economy?
So having a holiday in just one area can't possibly work, so that idea wouldn't even have got past the "Initial idea" phase before it was thrown out as a waste of time and effort.
As stated before what about the guy living in the area with a holiday but working "over the border" in an area that didn't, does he get leave when his residential area has leave or when his employers area has leave?

I have it noted on my calendar but I pay more attention to Bank Closure days as that can impede overseas transactions coming into my Thai Bank account . Holidays here have always been hit or miss, if shops are open great, if closed no problems best way to deal with it.
I have to be truthful yet to find Big C closed at all , I may be mistaken, but I am sure it has been open virtually every day for the last 19 years. Certain sections may be closed but normally it is open.

I agree, a regional suite of four disparate long weekends is anathema to the whole premise of collectively bringing happiness to the people. Maybe something got mangled in the translation (not totally unknown here in The Blighted Realm) and the idea was for everyone to trek off to the north this weekend and blow their hard-earned. Based on that premise, maybe Udon can expect its domestic tourism windfall in May?

How about spending that "special day" videoing someone preparing/cooking/eating some street food, then you can upload it for everyone else all over Thailand to watch someone preparing/cooking/eating some street food (based in Mrs Stats line/facebook friends a picture of food is a "must" for every outing :-k
