What A Way To Go

Post by dooley110 » September 14, 2006, 3:44 pm

By THOMAS WHITAKER
September 14, 2006
A DRUNK Brit drowned in a hotel pool during a tragic birthday game to find out who could hold their breath the longest.

Richard Mamphey — celebrating his 24th — was declared the winner by pals before the horrific truth dawned on them.
Richard, from East London, had been drinking with 20 pals on the Greek island of Kos when they decided to take it in turns to see how long each could spend underwater.
Police captain Christos Dimopoulos told how witnesses said the group had spent the evening in a nightclub and were “very drunk, some were vomiting, and some laughing hysterically”.

He said a coroner had ruled that Richard had drowned.

A three-week police investigation since the tragedy last month yesterday ruled out foul play.

None of the group of British holidaymakers will face charges.

But the hotel’s management will be questioned over possible negligence.

Richard’s dad Ray questioned the cops’ findings that there was a game.

Deserter US marine finally gets caught after 40 years.

PHOENIX - U.S. border agents arrested a Marine deserter wanted for the last 40 years as he drove into California from Mexico, the Customs and Border Protection agency said on Friday.

Officers checking 63-year-old Victor Aguirre's car and papers at the busy San Ysidro border crossing near San Diego discovered there was a felony warrant issued by the Marines outstanding against him since 1966, during the Vietnam War.

Aguirre would likely be taken to Camp Pendleton, a Marine base north of San Diego, and be discharged without facing formal charges, the San Diego Union-Tribune quoted a Marine spokesman as saying.
i bet he forgot all about it.

contractual obligation

Judge Says Hooker Must Honor Contract
HARARE, Zimbabwe - A prostitute who ran away from a client demanding a third bout of sex should have delivered, a judge said Wednesday. Judge Lawrence Kamocha criticized a lower court for convicting a man of raping a prostitute after she refused a third round of sex in bushes outside a night club, complaining that the fee of 70 Zimbabwe dollars ($1.83) was too small. ``The accused was entitled to hold the complainant to the terms of the agreement and she was bound to perform,'' Justice Kamocha said. Prostitution is illegal in Zimbabwe but the judge said the woman was under a contractual obligation.

More odd news.........

Italian thief accidentally turns himself in

MILAN - An Italian thief accidentally turned himself in after losing his cellular phone while robbing an elderly lady, calling his own number to meet the finder -- and unwittingly arranging a date with police.

The 77-year-old victim handed over the phone that the bag snatcher had dropped to police, who lured the thief to a meeting where he was arrested, news agency Agi reported on Monday.

Agi said the man had been freed from prison recently under an Italian mass pardon meant to ease congestion in jails.

By the time police were waiting for him at the meeting point, the 35-year-old had already robbed another old lady and was riding a stolen scooter, Agi said.

First penis transplant reversed
Tue Sep 19, 2006 1:43 PM BST
LONDON - Surgeons in China who said they performed the first successful penis transplant had to remove the donated organ because of the severe psychological problems it caused to the recipient and his wife.

Dr Weilie Hu and surgeons at Guangzhou General Hospital in China performed the complex 15-hour surgery on a 44-year old man whose penis had been damaged in a traumatic accident.

The microsurgery to attach the penis, which had been donated by the parents of a 22-year-old brain-dead man, was successful but Hu and his team removed it two weeks later.

"Because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife, the transplanted penis regretfully had to be cut off," Hu said in a report published online by the peer reviewed journal European Urology, without elaborating.

"This is the first reported case of penile transplantation in a human," Hu added.

Both the man and his wife had requested the surgery. He had been unable to have intercourse or urinate properly since the accident that occurred 8 months before the surgery was performed.

Ten days after the operation, which had been approved by the hospital's medical ethical committee, the recipient had been able to urinate.

There had been no signs of the 10-centimetre (4-inch) organ being rejected by the recipient's body. But Hu said more cases and longer observation are needed to determine whether sexual sensation and function can be restored.

"The patient finally decided to give up the treatment because of the wife's psychological rejection, as well as the swollen shape of the transplanted penis" Hu added.
In a commentary in the journal, Yoram Vardi, of the Rambam Medical Centre in Haifa, Israel, said the successful surgery represents an additional step in contemporary medicine.

But he added that careful patient selection is required as well as thorough informed consent of the patient and his family.

"Satisfactory consideration of these issues must be taken into account so that this approach can be considered a serious therapeutic option in the future," Vardi added.
Surely the doctors name can't be "Weilie" Hu.

So he must be Dr Hu........

Safety awareness meeting at Pattaya City Hall.
The Chief of Pattaya Police who joined a meeting at Pattaya City Hall on Wednesday Morning in response to continuing violence in the South of Thailand and the Military Coup in Bangkok. There are ongoing fears that either or both issues could affect life here in Pattaya. The Police summoned local motorbike taxi drivers, business owners and community leaders to City Hall to inform them that their cooperation is required to ensure that safety for local residents and tourists is maintained and should anything out of the ordinary occur, they must inform the relevant authorities immediately.
why can't the Udon Thani City Hall do the same........... Safety for Tourists.

A bit of topical odd news here...........

BANGKOK - In a country obsessed with style, it was perhaps no surprise that Thailand's military chiefs chose a former beauty queen to unveil their coup to the nation.

Along with the weathered visage of retired Lieutenant-General Prapart Sakuntanak -- familiar as the face of previous military forays into politics -- viewers of every television channel were treated to Miss Asia 1987 Thawinan Khongkran.

Drawing on a wealth of experience gleaned from her beauty pageant, modelling and singing days, the 42-year-old admitted to having to change her normally soft-spoken delivery to add more authority as she announced details of the military putsch.

"I was confident in my superiors and told myself that we were trying to bring peace to the country," said Thawinan, head of public relations at army-run Channel 5 Television, as quoted by the Nation newspaper.

But the Miss University of Asia 1986 is not just a pretty face. The newspaper said she also holds a masters degree -- with a thesis entitled "The role of the media in creating the image of Miss Thailand from 1964 to 1988".

Heres one for the golfers...

Golfer laughs off horror 19 on par three

TOKYO (Reuters) - Superstitious or not, Japanese golfer Mitsuhiro Tateyama is likely to shudder whenever he comes across the number 19 in future after an horrific round at this week's Acom International.

Still, though, Tateyama could see the funny side after setting a Japanese record by taking 19 on a par-three hole at the Ishioka Golf Club on Thursday.

The 38-year-old found the rough with his second shot before hitting it into bushes where he took 14 shots to hack the ball out -- but at he least avoided three-putting.

It was the worst single-hole score since Norio Suzuki incorrectly signed for a 42, his nine-hole total, at a Japanese tournament in 1987. The previous worst for one hole was 15.

"There were more reporters around me than for the leader," joked Tateyama after his meltdown on the eighth. "That must be a world record or something."

Tateyama added: "My mind went blank. I lost count of the number of strokes I had. I couldn't even see the ball when it was in the bushes. I just wanted to get it out quick."

Tateyama, who has never won a Japanese tour title, finished with a 13-over-par 84 but surprisingly avoided carding the day's worst score after recovering with four birdies.

try and get your head round this strange news..

Burglars shocked by severed heads

VIENNA - Burglars in Vienna opted for a speedy getaway after they found eight severed human heads when breaking into the basement of a block of flats, Austrian police said on Friday.

A dentist had stored the mummified heads, which he used for research, in a chest in the basement. Burglars stumbled upon the collection when they broke in, police said.

"The burglars were looking for loot when they discovered the heads," said a spokeswoman for Austrian police. "From what it looks like, they just left them lying and bolted away."

Austrian authorities said they were investigating whether there had been a breach of the regulations for storing research materials.

SAN FRANCISCO - A Montana mother who allowed her 18-month-old baby daughter to inhale from a marijuana water pipe on several occasions was properly convicted, but should not have to spend five years in jail, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday.

Jessica Durham was photographed allowing her toddler Michala to suck from a marijuana water pipe, also known as a bong, in 2004 by a friend upset about the activity.

"Ms. Durham allegedly remarked that smoking improved Michala's appetite and left Michala lethargic and mellow - a manner she found consistent with her own experience smoking marijuana," Judge Louis Pollak of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals wrote in summarising the case.

In 2005, a lower court sentenced Durham to five years in prison for unlawful marijuana distribution. She appealed both the conviction and the sentence.

In its ruling on Friday, a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit upheld the conviction but said the sentence exceeded the applicable federal law which calls for punishment of no more than two years in prison.
