Poms who arrived by boat !

Post by rick » October 13, 2014, 10:13 pm

Another source of convicts where harsh vagrancy and other laws in England. There is a town in Dorset, which when i was younger had a sign on the bridge over the river which said "Anyone found defacing this bridge will be transported for life". Sadly that sign has now disappeared - probably some local tried to use it to get a free trip .....

Reading all that ronan01 makes Vlad Putin look like a good guy. I reckon he and Abbott are really birds of a similar feather and in more ordinary times would be mates. We are fortunate to be living in the twenty first century in decent countries.

[quote="BobHelm"]I think that you will find there is no definite origin from the meaning of Pom.
Some say it is a shortening of Pomegranate in reference to the colour of the fruit & the colour that recent arrivals from England turned after being out in the sun long term.
The Prisoners of Mother England is, at best, a fanciful reply & highly unlikely in the context of the word..

I agree with you Bob H....In my very humble opinion nobody knows the definite origin, or meaning of the term 'POME' or sometimes refereed to as 'POM' I read some where that "MAYBE" it originated from the English solder's involvement in the Middle East during the conflicts of war. Being exposed to the environment, including a very hot sun burning down on their (previously) white skin, as a consequence turning a shade of red, perhaps like the red colour of a POMEgranate (fruit) Oh...I almost forgot..... of this reference to the definite origin (to the term POME) you may perceive as being 100% correct (he, he,)..... (that being, depending on your individual perception, meaning, and origin of the term POME).....   ....cheers harpo

Prof Manning Clarke also offered POHM . Worn on the back of the convicts uniform. Prisoner of His Majesty.

Either way a 10 pound Pom can still be seen in Udon . Drinking 10 baht Archas. Lol

Bottom line is. It was a very successful programme. Bar Gillard and Abbott

I'm pleased you're only joking downunder otherwise Australia would have missed out on Kylie Minogue and Alan Bond. Australia just wouldn't be the same without those wonderful Aussies.

There's nothing wrong with Australians. It's the white ones you have to watch out for.

I'm shattered to learn Paul Hogan was a 10 pound pom. I trust Mick Dundee wasn't and in the movie script he was scripted as being born in Australia.

If I see in the distance a farang shuffling around Udon and he looks 10% like Mick Dundee I invariably guess he's an Aussie. Often I have to picture Mick as an old geezer well past his best years and 10 to 30 kgs overweight. I'm now worried I have been mistaking Brits for Aussies.

Perhaps I now need to change my test and should approach the said gentlemen and ask to see his knife.

Phar Lap [thai for lightning]

Pick yourself up GT and piece yourself together. Hoges is Australian as a pair of thongs. Born in Lightening Ridge, New South Wales.

Can not help but notice the amount of Pacific Poms that came here for their step up in life being mentioned here. As Russell Crowe said at his acceptance speech for his Academy Award "THANK GOD" for Australia

Mel Gibson's granny was an opera singing ozzy though

My second great grand uncle got a free passage to Oz in 1834 aboard the "Lady Nugent", but he came back after his seven years there. Still waiting for the Aussie Post office to deliver the mail though.

" Leaving of Liverpool " is a tragic part of Australian history. Christian Brothers should be all castrated for allowing their abuse to be tolerated etc.
