My licence is the same, never gave me a problem, with car hire or the police and they have asked for it a few times, so i carefully take it out and hand the tatty piece of paper to the man in brown, i don't think he knows what he is looking at mind you, just gives a smile back sometimes they have a laugh, and i am on my way...
but will renew this year .
just to add its in 3 pieces and been the same for years.

Not too late Pete, depending on where you are flying from...
If Heathrow airport, just get there before 4pm and go to the Post office within the airport... there you can obtain International Driving Permit on production of your existing licence and passport, plus a small fee (ฃ5.50 unless it's changed this year).
You also need passport sized photo (obtainable in the airport)...
This IDP is acceptable as ID most places for car hire, and most police do know what it is
Have a good trip :D

UK photo (credit card type) driving licence lasts for 10 years from date issued... reason being, your photoraph will be out of date (as you get older).

International driving permit (type 1949) IS a legal requirement in Thailand... it accompanies your regular licence from issuing country, and only lasts for one year from date of issue.
My Thai father-in-law is a retired policeman, and knows the law
however, most times.. you can get away with regular UK licence, it pays you to be legal incase of an accident.
