... booking early bargain fares with Air Asia. Three person return fares Udon to Chiang Mai for 5,000 baht is great :-s
It is an excellent return price,Brian, but I thought only Nok Air flew from Udon to Chiang Mai ? :-k
Have Air Asia also started a direct flight from Udon, otherwise you would have to fly via Bangkok ?
The answer must be yes, Zid - but you did make me check the itinerary! Pleased to say direct flight takes 1 hr 20 mins and lands same day. \:D/ I don't know when the new service starts, but I booked a promotion which closed around New Year. I'm not flying till end of March, thus my concern the schedule may get changed. I understand it's NOT a prop plane, but one of the normal fleet/capacity. Whether Nok Air is continuing, I don't know. Now I'm waiting for the Udon FC fixtures, in the hope they may be away to Chiang Mai or Lampang on that weekend. Mind you, the wife will never believe it's a coincidence. :fryingpan:

P.S. Now searching the Air Asia schedule, the new service seems to start from 15 Feb.

Yes,I see their flight now,Brian......not bad times either.
If you go mid week its 690 baht, all in one way,but if you have luggage its an extra 330 baht.
Still,1020 baht isn't bad....relating to 2040 baht for a return trip.
A return trip with Nok Air,useing the same dates and 15kg luggage,is nearly 2800 baht.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Be careful ... Double check your flight schedule... The displayed Udon Airport flight schedule might not match the actual airline schedule. For instance Thai Smile WE 3 departs at 08:35 according to Thaismile booking site but at 09:10 according to Airport departures. Similar discrepancies with the arrival times. If you book few weeks-months in advance confirm with the Airlines because the Airport site not being updated..

Flew out on WE3 on 6th, boarding at 8:40 and departed at 09:10. That was the same flight times when I did the online check-in and what was stated on my itinerary. Not at all sure where you are seeing 8:35 departure on their website either... just checked.

Does anyone know if there is another airline besides Nok Air with nonstop direct flights between Udon and Chiang Mai? Tough to read the posted Thai language flight schedule. Thanks

Not sure about Nok, I looked a week ago and there were none (including Nok) I could find, all went via BKK. Have not checked if any go from KK.
I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

Nok is the only airline flying direct to Chiangmai from Udon according to the posted schedule.

Air Asia has/had 2 daily flights from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai as a possible alternative.
I,d check with the airline itself if you are interested.

Would have thought that by the time you drive Udon - KK
Park
Check In
Take the flight
Travel CM airport - CM centre

You could be well over half way there by road, far cheaper, and you wouldn't need to hire "wheels" when there :-k

years ago the route to Chiang Mai was tortuous and long, now with the roads improved, what used to be a 11+ hour drive is comfortable with less time spent on the road anything from 6 to 10 depending on route and speed travelled. I used toi do it quite regularly and found , down to KK, turn right to Phitsuanlok and then right again up to Chiang Mai, good roads and speed acceptable got it down to 9.30 hours.
