New license plates needed

Post by tamada » August 6, 2019, 9:05 pm

The worthies of the RTP Highway division pulled me over on the Mitrapharb in the wee small hours last Monday and advised me that I need to get my plates renewed as they can't read the lettering. They are 4 years from new but the black has truly bleached out, both front and back.

What transport office in Meuang Udon Thani do I need to hit to get new plates and what's the turnaround time?

Maybe I should change them completely and get an auspicious number. How much grief does that add to the ritual?

A few years back one of my plates went missing. Went to the office in Non Sung to order a replacement. Seem to remember it taking about 2 weeks to get a duplicate.

Where's the main transport office? There's a few purple buildings around town so if the one you mention can emboss plates while-u-wait, that would be best.

It would seem logical but this being Thailand, if you get caught with a any sort of DIY paint job on the plates, the cops will issue a ticket. Back in 2010/11 when factory paint started flaking off new plates from a new supplier, the wait list for new or replacement plates was over 6 months and a few people discovered this law the hard way.

Very true. My plates, especially the front one, have been faded beyond legibility for maybe 2 of the last 4 years but this is the first time a highway cop has mentioned it needs sorted. Looks like you can't be ticketed for it which is handy but easier to get it sorted since being pulled over once happily in warp drive is a bit of a chore. The traffic stop was very, very busy BTW with some being directed to the sala to pay fines and others like myself getting the nod to carry on.

yes , plausible deniability. a few jabs with the
permanent marker, they'd have to send the plates
off to lab to check for residue. 8-[ ill spend 40b

40 baht now... and 200-400 baht later, depending on how the MiB feels. Mind you, we are into rainy season and the traffic checks all seem to diminish with the rising rainfall.

The DLT office on the Mitrapharp is the place to go, 20 minutes of paperwork including photocopying and the new plates will be 'ready in one month.'

You have to go to the office in Non Sung (10-12km) south of Udon Thani. My wife ordered new plate last week and was told to come back after 60days.

Udon Thani Land Transport office for cars/trucks/buses located on the south side of Ban Non Soong. Go through Non Soong, past the Driving School (on your left), past the Artillery Regiment camp, then do a U-Turn and head back towards Non Soong.. You'll see the Land Transport Office on your left here:

Why my identification of cars/trucks/buses for that office?? Because motorcycles are processed at the Land Transport Office that's on the north side of town, on the east side of Route 2, about 1km south of the new tunnel/overpass here:

Went back after the requisite 60-days, surrendered the old plates and signed for the new one. Five minute job.
