Cure for Toenail Fungus?

A few years back I contracted toenail fungus after having a pedicure in the Philippines (unsanitized utencils). My dermotologist cured me with Lamasil tablets 250 mg once daily for 12 weeks. There is now a generic available in the States called Terbinafine 250 mg. It appears that this type of fungus can only be cured by medicine taken internally since the fungus grows in the skin under the nail and destroys the nails. There are plenty of topical creams that claim to cure it, but they are all bogus and don't work. I have somehow contracted the fungus again, and I can't seem to find either of those meds here in Udon. I see a huge percentage of the locals that have this fungus as well. Has anyone out there found any local remedies that actually work to eradicate the fungus 100%? Your comments are much appreciated.

Wazza, this link takes me to a Log In page. What's your secret for getting into this site. I have registered at least 2-3 times in the past, and it takes me to an advertising page and no further. Since registering I get 3-4 junk emails daily from online pharmacies. I block each one and more just keep coming.

There are a number of medicines available here in LOS only through a doctor. I use a steroid eye drop called Restasis to treat my eye problem. It's the only medicine available anywhere to treat the ailment. You cannot buy the medicine over the counter at a pharmacy but it is available by Rx from an eye doctor. The same applies to a sinus med called Telfast D which is only available through an ear nose & throat doctor here in LOS. I would suggest you visit one of the hospitals here in town for an exam as this med may also only be available from a doctor by Rx. I also used this medicine a number of years ago to treat a nail fungus and had to have a blood test a couple of times to check and make sure it wasn't causing damage to my liver. This may account for it not being available over the counter.

In my own experience, I have used both the prescription medicine for toe fungus as well as one my father, a retired medical doctor recommended. I found both to be effective and would recommend the one my father supported. If simply buy a jar of Vick's mentholatom chest rub and apply it to the affected areas twice a day you will notice a after a month a significant reduction of the affected area and within three months it should all be gone. Surprised the heck out of me but this is one of those things you have to try it to believe it. Good luck.

Vicks is made from petroleum jelly so it provides a waterproofing over the infected area. Will stop any more set areas after a shower etc.

It won't treat the clinical infection just stops dampness .

My friend used Itraconazole Sporanox treatment (pulse treatment) as prescribed by the Doctor Udon Paulo hospital, but then switched to the bathing in white vinegar before ultimately achieving success.

NO, this is serious stuff. I know it's gross, but it's very common, especially in Thailand. There are numerous websites available detailing home remedies, and others trying to peddle natural healing medications and creams...but they don't work. Most of these sites appear to be very well put together and informative, but they're designed just to sell you something. Many of these remedies are like most of the garbage that is sold in Thailand...making outrageous claims of effectiveness, but with absolutely no clinical evidence that it works. So I have decided to head to the hospital and see a doctor to get the medication that I know for sure cures it because I have used it before. Thanks for all of you comments and advice. I was hoping to hear back from someone who had actually used a local over-the-counter medication that did the trick, but so far no mention of it.

ok now I see a pic, I can say my mama has the same thing..its a fungi as I took her to a foot specialist here in NZ. He cut most of it off the toenails, but didnt give her any ointment.. my old lady used to do abit of swmming in public pools, you know old people trying to keep fit, but my guess it was her diet that caused it..she use to just eat meat and spuds, no vege or fruit, and drunk vodka by the truck load, now I have her on the wine, and I cook, so things are looking better in the toe department...Sem I would say you will have to cut all the dead wood off, if you know what i mean, and try and grow some new nails..I dont think Lamsil is the right thing for the job..

Thanks for the comments maaka! My dermatologist prescribed Lamisil tablets 250 mg once a day for 12 weeks, and sure enough I grew new nails fungus free. About 5 years later I somehow picked up the fungus again. Lamisil cream won't knock it out...it has to be the tablets taken internally. The doctor had me do a blood test for my liver since this med can affect liver function in some people, but no problems.
