Always a huge overreaction by my ex to my daughter and her family to their kids - runny nose means " oh she's got a temperechurch" (temperature) and straight off to the clinic or hospital. Total Bullcrap.

And the hospital (seeing how worried they are) would automatically advise a night (two if possible) in hospital just to keep an eye on the child. They won't however advise you that the only one keeping the "eye on the child" will be you, as the doctor will not visit until 10am the next day if you are lucky

Having been involved in teaching within the Thai medical system, ( Khon Kaen )

A general comment, many Thai's and in fact most Asian countries , they are well know for being Hypochondriacs, The local GP's are more than aware that to actually give the patient advice and no follow up medications , will mean a loss of revenue, both for their clinic and also repeat follow ups.

Antihistamines for rhinitis for the flu, WTF,

Vitamin C, world wide consensus that it has no effect for people with signs and symptoms of the Flu / Cold

Ever asked what that IM shot is that the local clinics give to make you feel better ?? Well it generally Vit K or just Normal Saline ( 0.9% )

Many GPs continue to treat young people with a mis diagnosis of Stomach Ulcers, and give them Ranitadine etc, when they should be treated for Helibactor Pylorus Bacteria first. Or even tried with Nexium. The majority of ulcers are caused from a bacteria you get at birth.

Bottom line is, patients and not just in Thailand / Asia including western countries want some form of medication at the end of a GP consultation even if its for supportive measure and no clinical benefits

The problem in Thailand and Asia , Middle East and North Africa is that antibiotics are freely bought over the counter , and people with the help of Dr Google , self medicate. This also then leads to Super Bugs and drug resistance , They are reporting now, that we may have 10 years left with the current Antibiotics regimes and it takes longer than that for RnD, clinical trials for a new drug.

MM's will survive in Thailand , while patients want them,

Thailand would benefit IMO, from having 10 coloured placebos .

Rotten summer cold, I seem to get one just about every year. Normally three week and it's done. Not being one to run to the Dr. every time I sneeze. I just took tylenol and actifed. Rested thinking I would just ride it out.

Well three weeks pasted I was better but far from over it. Lots of flu going around. I had the flu shot. But sometimes they miss on the strain. So I thought it was time to get it checked out.

Went to Bangkok Hospital, Dr did a blood test, the checked my nose with a sample and h gave me a chest Xray.

No flu. But, my white v blood count was down. So she prescribed an antibiotec ( I try not use these anymore then I have to )

I get to check out 2,400 baht

I also got a pills for a runny nose didn't have one, also a cough medication, Didn't have a cough I questioned it they offered to remove from the bill. But a I said I seem to get the is every year. So might as well have the medication on hand.

Well that Dr. knew something I didn't know, took the anitbiotec, within six hours my nose was running like a fountain, two hours later I started coughing. I very happy I paid for the meds.

Been 24 hours now I feel better then I have for weeks.

So no complaint's from me. Things were done very well with a good result.

The bad part is that you could most likely get those at one of the regular pharmacies for less than half the price you paid. :?

My wife was admitted one night for a pain in the stomach area. They did ultra sound there and Xrays there. The did a CT scan and used the new system for a specialist to review in Bangkok. You might note that foreigners are not their main target. Insurance is pretty much a must to use them. The total bill was 34K with the tests. Nothing found and she was better the next day and went home, She had BUPA an they covered it all with the exception of 236 baht.

When the wife had the Gall Bladder surgery, it was pre existing and not covered, She has the 30 baht program as well, it 90K less going with the 30 baht program. The medical service there was good. The living conditions left a lot to be desired, here are private rooms there, But they are not always available. Hence the wife spent two night in a ward with other patients. The real down side is people expressing pain all night. She has used the 30 baht program three times now it's not always 30 baht. But, inexpensive none the less

If your under 60 you can qualify for Bupa, I think the last year I spent around 6o K a year. I switched to April Care, it simply covers a lot more, no limit on age. But , it is 140 K a year at age 67. One way or another you going to pay. At my age I wanted the extra coverage. It's the big stuff I worry about,. If you have insurance they can get you pre approved quickly and no money deposit is required,

when presented with my bill this morning at the hospital it was to my mind rather high.. I paid up, then as I started to walk away looking at the bill noted "Medical Supplies" being nearly 1800 baht.. Whoa!!! I walked back to the cashier who quickly presented an itemized list of the billed "medical supplies" of which they'd used only four out of the twenty plus listed for my visit that day.. She quickly got on the phone and after about ten minutes cancelled the previous bill and refunded me about 1400 Baht.. So, if your bill lists "medical supplies" and it looks a bit expensive, have the cashier show you the itemized list.. Note that if you do an ER visit, they will bill you off for everything used down to the 3 baht cotton wipe used on your arm before they give you a shot.. This appeared to be a genuine mistake as many of the items listed appeared to be from a previous visit I'd made to the ER last Thursday...

Good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS ask for the "DETAIL" which is the itemized list of meds, supplies etc. This can be provided in either Thai or English.

Correct. I got a bill for B10,000 for treatment in ER Bangkok Hospital when I was bitten on the ankle by a dog. Luckily It was covered on my health insurance.
I couldn't believe it, I was waiting in the laundry shop doorway watching the bird putting my laundry in a bag and the dirty stinking barstard come up behind me and bit me on the ankle for no reason.

You're completely wrong as usual 747. I was wearing flip flops and I had my Paco Rabanne on. Unlike you 747 I don't wear socks with flip flops or smell of BO.

I've noted things like that as well. All and all I'm happy with the hospital. I will not buy Tylenol from them that is insane, I wonder how much of is the hospital and how much is employee activity. Either way we pay the freight. I would probably be happier paying a bi more for a Dr's visit and less for cotton swabs,

At thee weekend I priced up some medication I need to buy once my UK prescription runs out.
For exactly the same product the hospital was twice the price of Boots.

You may be correct but unless you are comparing the medication and the same manufacturer from two different sources you could be making a serious mistake. Not all medication of the same name is the same here in LOS. The source of the main ingredient is important as it will affect the efficacy of the medicine. Medicine manufacturered in China is typically of less potency than the same medicine manufactured in the US or Canada. The same rule of thumb applies to the source of the active ingredient if it's made here in Thailand.
