MORE than one in four deaths in the UK is caused by heart disease.

That's nearly 170,000 people every year - making it Britain's biggest killer.

But things are improving as new research has found that deaths from heart attacks have almost halved in just a decade.

A study by Imperial College London found the number of Brits dying from heart disease fell by 42.5 per cent between 2005 and 2015.

Experts believe that's largely due to fewer people smoking with the number of smokers in England falling by more than one million since 2014.

And rates are expected to fall from the current level of 14.9 per cent by 2023, according to Public Health England.

Whilst Expats believe that's largely due to all the smokers and drinkers emigrating to countries with less draconian laws

My Heart Disease was discovered in 2014 after I was complaining about walking distances. Test's were carried out and I was asked to see a cardiac specialist. As I didn't suspect anything, he gave me the devastating news I had Heart failure and a triple heart bypass was the only answer. I had no symptoms or chest pains and i didn't suffer a Heart Attack. I now am more or less retired as no one will offer me Employment due to the risk. I am lucky it was discovered and im ok as long as i take my 5 tablets a day for life and every Three Monthe's I have full check ups. My message is simple guy's pay for an ECG or an Echogram it could save your life and pick up any defects you are unaware of believe me you don't need to have wait for chest pains as in my case I had no symptoms and no pains to suspect a Heart Condition.

Hey Vlad , the ECG and or Ultrasound have limitations in their use ,depending on the type of heart condition you have ,2001 ,i had the first of many heart attacks (i just thought it was indegestion) at the time i was very fit ,power walking most days ,they tried the ECG nothing untoward all all , then after i badgered them into it they tried the ultra sound ,nothing again major just a very slight leakage on a valve nothing to worry about ,after 12 moths of this (indegestion ha )they did a blood test ,! enzimes , hmm seems you've just had a heart attack , huh , "what about the last 12 months",, 2 angiograms later failed stent attempts ,i was informed they don't do single bypass ,pills pills pills , i came here , Khon Kaen heart hospital sorted it out ,managed to get the 50 mm blockage clear ,so at this stage i've another 35 mm blockage to go , at this point we did another ultrasound , it showed no evidence of the stent or blockage , even though there was a long stent in and still a 35mm blockage , I did this ultrasound to prove to the pensions board who stopped my retirement on health grounds that the application they used to assess my condition was flawed with limitations of usage ,They stated ,that was then this is now and will not reinstate my pension , nonsense , Khon Kaen cleared the last blockage , i've got nothing but praise for them , AM i glad that i moved to a "third world /developing country ,you bet your ass i am

Hoopee and Vlad.
Neither of you mentioned a treadmill stress test. Was this part of your original diagnosis and also performed as a stress echocardiogram on subsequent follow ups.

Glad you persisted Hoopoe my condition was called Cardio Myopathy with left ventricular failure. Basically a small part of the muscle that causes the beat had died due to lack of blood flow and oxygen they were hopeful my bypass would save this part but it did not work as the damage had already been done and it could not be saved happily the condition has not worsened but same as you i have to go in front of an assessment board to assess me fit for work. about a ear ago i had a very small stroke so now i take apixaban to thin my blood. So Hoopoe im glad you were able to get the help you needed and just chill out like me. We are the lucky one's sadly some dont get that opportunity. Barney I did not have a stress test an Angiogram found the blockages. Maybe if you can have an Angiogram this would probably find any blockages or thinning of the artery's.

Barney , i did the treadmill test with echo at same time in England , the result inconclusive ,now in Thailand (at that time i was unable to walk) i was sent down to BKK , at BKK heart hospital being tested by a American trained THai cardiologist , stress test under the influence of drugs to make my heart rate rise ,with an ultra sound and EKG at the same time ,yes they found the slight leaking valve but nothing else ,. they assumed that the Unstable Angina i suffered was make believe, i suffered this sh-t for 15 years , i didn't have to be doing anything , watching TV , in bed on a few occasions ,
2016 Q,S,HEART CENTER OF THE NORTH EAST completed the stent's ,(albeit the university Cardiologist couldn't do it ,three of them attempting it) ,luckily for me there was a professor up from BKK who succeeded in the difficult 50mm blockage , a few weeks later he completed the second 35 mm blockage but this time both sides of the groin were used , 1 to do the attempt , 2 to catch any plaque that breaks away ,i presume they didn't catch it all as the second and third toe on my right foot are numb at the tips ,but at least it didn't go upwards giving me a stroke ,
I've never had an Angina attack since ,which believe me is a great relief in itself ,
So as i stated some procedure's are good but can be limited in their usage ,On estimation i would say 90%(at least ) of the unstable Angina occurred at rest , hence the problem with diagnosis ,
Many Cardiologist would state what i've written is nonsense ,(because it's not written down in the medical Journals ) ,
THere's a Cardiologist in Udon General hospital, who told me that the Ultra sound would not show my heart condition, that's why inbetween ops i had it done just to stick 2 fingers up at the pensions doctors who solely relied on it as evidence that i didn't have a heart condition ,
Explaining to the Cardiologist at Udon & Khon Kaen what had gone on , they both stated it is more common than doctors think ,
So in conclusion if you want to be sure it's more intrusive but the angiogram is the way to go as it will find things the other procedures won't ,

Maybe its because people today eat more junk food , take aways full of MSG , and more processed food at home .
Something will always be the biggest killer , stands to reason . Less than a hundred years ago it was T B , before that some other horrible decease .

this is what happened in 2016
Most Thai's who know their stuff all go to Queen ,,,,,,,,Sirikit heart hospital Kohn Kaen , i had an angioram in Udon general hospital , they know their stuff there , they told me it was to difficult for them to do as they didn't have the full team necessary ,and advised me to go to KK the charge for the angiogram 15,000 bht , Emergency admittance to KK 2 difficult long stents ,2 separate op's ,only a professor from Bkk ( who was on a teaching mission at the time , lucky for me ) was able to unblock and stent as 3 cardiologists tried and failed , total cost 250,000 bht

The Angiogram at Udon General was 15,000bht plus 7,000 bht for hospital care ,medication etc , they found the blockages .but as above ,to difficult for them the attempt , as an added note they also went in through the wrist not the groin,

I agree 100%, few years back, my TGF had a heart attack, we took her to Aek, they could do anything, went to Udon General Hospital, real pro staff, they managed to stabilize her and they provided medical personnel for her transfer trip to KK an individual. They save her...

Thanks for the info, but I was more interested in the non evasive CT angiogram.

Thanks for the info, but I was more interested in the non evasive CT angiogram.
This CT is new to me so have read up on it,
It is no good for me as i have known blockages ,i wouldn't wan't to waste anytime having to go back for the invasive Angiogram, the point of the invasive Angiogram is if they find anything they maybe able to correct there and then .
So it's upto the person , if they think or are convinced they have a blockage , then should go for invasive, the CT i think i read is 95% accurate were as the invasive is 100% accurate in finding blockages etc , but as stated on a few web sites the CT noninvasive is improving all the time ,but also remember TIT .

maybe worth a read i picked this up ,

A coronary CT angiogram is a test that can check your heart for various conditions, but it's primarily used to check for narrowed arteries in your heart (coronary artery disease) that could explain chest pain or could put you at risk of a heart attack.

Coronary CT angiograms are sometimes used instead of traditional coronary angiograms to check for coronary artery disease. A CT angiogram may be better than a traditional angiogram for people who have only a moderate risk of coronary artery disease.

Typically, when your doctor needs to check for blockages in your heart's arteries, he or she will perform a coronary angiogram. In a coronary angiogram, a catheter is inserted in an artery in your groin and threaded through your blood vessels to your heart. Dye that's visible on X-rays is then injected through the catheter, and X-ray images of your heart are taken.

Your doctor can see blockages and areas of narrowing in your heart's arteries on the images. Because the catheter is near your heart, if blockages are found, your doctor can perform a procedure called angioplasty to open your blockages after a traditional angiogram. However, many people who have coronary angiograms don't have any blockages.

In a CT angiogram, no catheter has to be placed in your groin, and the dye that's visible on the CT scan is injected through an intravenous (IV) line that's placed in your hand or arm. X-ray images are still taken of your heart. However, because no catheter is used, if you need treatment to improve blood flow to the heart, you'll need a separate procedure (a traditional coronary angiogram) to treat your condition.

A test that's similar to CT angiogram is a coronary calcium scan. This test uses a special type of computerized tomography to check for calcium in your coronary arteries, which can be a risk factor for coronary artery disease. No dye is injected during a coronary calcium scan.
