Re: Darren-Dutchyshen-death Another Great Canadian
It is sad that he is dead, but his death from prostate cancer did not leave me flabbergasted as the report suggests, nor do I think many other Canadians were shocked to learn that he is no more.
Here is a better obituary from Saskatoon than the one from Yahoo.

Yes, and that is what I suggested. But the statement made by Yahoo that 'Canadians were flabbergasted' is incorrect. The statement that he was a great Canadian is also incorrect. He was a nice person with a friendly personality on screen; however, the fact that he was a sports commentator does not make him great although his close family and friends and you might think so.

Yes, that is true. However, one should not overdo it as the words 'flabbergasted' and 'great' suggest. You posted on the death of the political and social commentator, Rex Murphy, a week or so ago. His death would have more impact on Canadians owing to his controversial views than poor Mr. Dutchyshen, who read and commented on sports news on TV.
Sir Frederick G. Banting would be regarded as a great Canadian: 'Insulin was discovered by Sir Frederick G Banting (pictured), Charles H Best and JJR Macleod at the University of Toronto in 1921 and it was later purified by James B Collip.' https://www.diabetes.org.uk/our-researc ... B%20Collip.
Nevertheless, you are to be commended for bringing these two Canadians to the attention of the readers of this forum. That was nice of you, and I thank you for doing so.

If you ask many Canadians I am very positive they can tell you who the poor commentators and individuals who keep Canada together. Let us think Jean Beliveau, Tim Horton, Wayne Gretzky, Eddie Shack, the poorest of them all perhaps Don Cherry, Ron MacLean etc and so on
To belittle a person upon their death as you have done with Darren, is unwarranted
You call yourself a Canadian , I presume, shame
One can only wait to see what comments are made regarding yourself upon your demise

Whatever is said or printed about me once I'm dead won't bother me in the least. It doesn't bother me now so why should it then.
Surely, you jest if you are including Darren with Beliveau, Horton Cherry et al. With the exception of Don Cherry, none of them were sports commentators. They played the game as did Don. McLean was an active referee at the time I left Canada.
I respect Mr. Dutchysen, but I will not make him out to be something he was not. What actions did he take to keep Canada together, say, during the Quebec crisis? He would probably agree with me rather than you.
The Grey Cup is a sports event that binds Canadians together as is the Stanley Cup when Canadian teams are involved.
Don Cherry, by the way, was as controversial as Rex Murphy.

You say you lived in Canada and you dont know who Ron McLean is!
Best have a read

As for Darren helping to hold Canada together during the Quebec Crisis in 1970, he was 4 years old at the time being born in 1966. His interests at the time I can well imagine were more along the lines of, where are we going to play than, "Who are Pierre Laporte and James Cross along with the FLQ"
I will sign of knowing you aint got a clue

What's the Canadian word for 'handbags' again?

Re: Darren-Dutchyshen-death Another Great Canadian
Jeez Doodoo, what's wrong with you? I mentioned that McLean works as a referee (hockey) when he's not on Coache's Corner or whatever it is called now.
I truly believe you are showing disrespect to the late Mr. Dutchyshen by making him out to be something he was not. He was a competent and respected reader of sports news with a good sense of humour. He was not a hockey player like Jean Beliveau, Eddie Shack or others you mentioned. He was not a commentator/controversial figure in the same way that Don Cherry was. The late Mr. Dutchyshen had prostate cancer, so I doubt many people were flabbergasted that he lost that battle. Was he 'great'? Up to you think.
Show some respect, cut out the nonsense, and let the man rest in peace.
Tamada, 'handbags' is just that in Canadian English.
