car insurance

Post by Ray.Charles » March 17, 2010, 9:07 am

I own a 2009 Toyota Hilux Vigo, 3.0L, 4-wheel drive, raised suspension, manual, that is up for its first insurance renewal.
By a minor scam when I bought the thing last year, insurance was placed with AIOI Bangkok insurance company through an agent located near the dealership on Kon Kaen road. The coverage offered for this year is for B540,000 on the car, B10,000,000/B500,000 liability for each accident/each person, B1,000,000 for property, and B100,000/ B50,000/ B200,000 for life/medical/bail bond for me.
We had a small claim of B1,589 last year, a mistake by my lady made in my absence. But, still the policy shows a 20% discount.
The net cost for the police offered is B17,676 plus the VAT for the total of B18,929.
Any comments on the company AIOI, the agency and the cost will be apppreciated.

Hi - I see AA insurance has opened up in Udon or shortly will be and so may be worth a try. Their email addy is:

[email protected]

They had an ad for staff:

"AA Insurance will shortly be opening an office in Udon Thani and will require some additional staff.

We specialise in insurance for foreigners within Thailand, and cover most sectors of the insurance marketplace, including:
Health/medical, Car, Motorbike, Travel, Business cover, Home/house/apartment/condo contents & buildings cover and Vehicle breakdown.

All insurance policies will be issued in English language."

I'll be checking them out myself for the car, bikes & health when I get back. At least I'll be able to read the policies!

Cheers
Phil

LMG Insurance charged me 14,636 THB for a policy on a vehicle insured for 390,000. The policy was 18,906 with a discount of 5,839. Higher levels of coverage cost 557. The VAT was 957. Stamp Duty was 55.

The coverage is higher: liability 1m per person, 10m per accident with 2.5m property damage. (wouldn't cover hitting a new Benz). 100,000 for loss of life for driver and up to 6 passengers at 100,000 each. 100,000 per person medical (I hope they don't go to a private hospital if seriously injured) and 200,000 bail bond.

OT paid around 16k to the insurance agent for his 4x4 insurance, three months later I got a letter from the insurance company saying that if I had paid my insurance premium I should go to the police station and report it because the insurance agent had not paid it to the company. I had a receipt for the money and insurance documents given to me by the agent when I paid it. It turns out that those documents were not valid and I had been uninsured for three months.
When my Mrs rang the agent he started crying on the phone begging us not to go to the police and ruin his life, and with that his mother came round to my place and refunded the money I gave him. I switched Companies and paid the premium directly in the insurance company office. I never reported it to the police.
So if you pay an agent who comes to your house, check with the insurance company that the money has been paid to them.

His family live just down the road from my place and are nice people, as for him, who I've never seen since he tried to rob me 6 months ago - I'll smack him in the gob when I see him and probably get arrested myself. Whatever.

Smack him in the gob? Glad to see you're still working for the changwat, o-t.

I've had car insurance through the Toyota dealer for almost 4 years and got premium discounts every year except the latest one when a Thai on a motorbike tried to become a hood ornament on my minivan. The insurance company paid for all repairs on my vehicle and raised my premium a whopping 100 baht. I'm paying 13,000 baht for 1st class coverage. Could shop around to save a few pennies but I'm OK with what I have.

polehawk, I am assuming that the Toyota dealer is an agent. Who is your insurance company? I too thought that I was getting the insurance through the Toyota dealer when I bought my car last year from them. I found out later that the sales agent pulled a scam on me and had the car insured through an outside agent with AIOI insurance, no doubt for a commission. I did not find that out until the dealership called me to ask for my insurance at the time of issuing the plates.

FWIWD: We didn't know if it would work, but we told the saleman at Toyota that we would only accept Viriyah insurance (as the complimentary first year). That worked without a problem.

We also told the salesman, 'no red plate, no sale' when he said there were no plates available. Wonder of wonders, he dug up 'the last plate' in stock.

Even more off-topic but related to Toyota: In days past, Toyota didn't offer free tint, bedliner, wheelcovers, etc. But the saleman/lady took you to the ha-yak merchants to have the stuff installed (I'm sure they got a commission). I was not overly impressed with the workmanship of those merchants. Today, however, Toyota offers the tint, bedliners with most trucks as promotions, and they do the work themselves on site. No a biggee, but better than the days of old.

Ray, my Toyota Avanza minivan is insured with Union Prospers Insurance Company and the Toyota salesman we had did set it up. He set us up with another company for the 1st year which was the complimentary one that Parrot mentioned but that company (forgot the name) went out of business near the end of that first year so the dealer/sales found Union Prospers for us and it's worked out fine. The insurance rep met us at the accident scene and handled everything with the police and repair shop.

There are many this year I pay 11000 for my 6 yr old Mitsu 4x4 but it is No 1 ins with a man that comes out if one has an accident. That is probably even more important as they deal with the police and the other party and I can assure you they do not pay anyone anything.

Which also saves you having to deal with the police's outrageous demands occasionally.

My current ins is with dipaya Ins just down from Tyre pluss on the same side, good effeeicent and ok so far, but as with many things it can change. watch this space.

Hi
We've also got a 2009 Vigo 4x4 we renewed begining of Feb with Viriyah insurance for B12,800. All the figure you quote are prety much the same as the quote we got. The agent we used, on recommendation, is just down the street from Toyota
Sorry can't help withg AIOI.

Hi Kudjap, if your premium is correct, then I have been shafted, hugely. Just yesterday, 22nd, before I read yours, I bought insurance from VIRYAH at their Head Office for Udon, across the street from the Army hospital.
Coverage: liability people 1M, 10M and property 2.5M
Car 540,000
Medical 100,000/100,000, Bail bond 200,000
Cost before discount 26,195 20% good boy discount 5,239  Net 20,956
After tax 84 and VAT 1,473, I paid 22,513.
I moved from AIOI because of the positive comments I hear about VIRYAH, and higher (2.5M vs. 1.0M) property coverage, and better (100,000 vs. 50,000) medical coverage. But, it cost about 3,600 more for the VIRYAH.
I just don’t get the reason for the large difference in the premium for your and my pick-up. How much is the coverage on your vehicle?
