I'm looking for the departure times for the night bus from Udon Thani to Chiang Mai, and more importantly the arrival time as well. thanks.

There was a thread on this some time ago, not sure if it's still accurate though:
http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/b ... 10367.html

It sounds like the bus leaves 8-8.30pm and arrives around 12 hours later.

I'm hoping someone else may be able to update us with the latest information.

Also just to note, I've heard the journey can be a bit of a nightmare, again, it would be nice to know if things have improved with the route :)

It has been a few months since I have gone along that route (not by bus though) BB & in general the road has improved. They have been gradually upgrading the main route from Udon to Chang Mai for some time now & it has been a long time in the doing - at least 3 years to my knowledge. However, stretches of it go up & down the mountains between the two areas though & those areas cannot not be greatly improved. So you have up (slow) & down (hair raising) along twisting roads. I have done the route once in a bus & that was enough for me, I always drive myself now. To say that bus drivers do not enjoy a good reputation in Thailand is an understatement - in many cases it is well deserved as well... :(

I think you have confirmed the things I've heard Bob, certainly sounds like driving or flying is the way to go.

I did that route also last April (bus). Going there was a nightmare for me because of my friend's horrible snoring. Left Udon at 2030hrs and arrived at about 0800hrs. Going back was a lot better. Thanks to the 2 cans of chang beer i had just before we left chiangmai, LOL
