Tropical storm Gaemi about to hit Thailand

Eastern and northeastern provinces will face rainfall and strong winds later on Friday as tropical storm Gaemi moves closer to Thailand, the Meteorological Department has confirmed.
As the department issued its latest warning, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was confident that Thailand is prepared to cope with the first tropical storm to hit the country in three years.
All government agencies and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are draining water from canals and reservoirs to prepare for the impact of Gaemi, the prime minister said.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and possibly strong winds in other parts of the country on the weekend when the storm enters Thailand from Vietnam and Cambodia before it leaves the country on Monday. Other affected areas will be the central region and southern provinces, it added.
Hospitals in the provinces expected to be hit by the storm, including Chanthaburi, Trat, Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri and Nakhon Ratchasima, have been told to prepare for an emergency situation and ordered to stay alert around the clock from Friday, according to Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri.
In Bangkok, the BMA's drainage office has prepared five million sandbags for the worst case scenario and worked with the Royal Irrigation Department to help push water in all canals close to the capital out to rivers and the Gulf of Thailand. City Hall has drained water in all canals in the inner part of Bangkok.
Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the BMA can handle the impact of Gaemi and added that he did not expect the capital to be heavily flooded.
"If rainfall is no more than 100 millimetres, some areas will be flooded to only 30 centimetres high and the water can be drained in one day," the governor said.
Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said on Thursday that the military is ready to cooperate if the government wants to use defence areas to retain flood water.
The military was always on standby to help if Bangkok is hit by heavy rain, he said. Soldiers would be sent to help at trouble spots, provide transport assistance and help solve traffic problems.
"We would be glad to comply if the government wants to use the area of the 2nd Cavalry Division as a monkey cheek (water retention area) since there are many ponds and swamps in it," ACM Sukumpol said.
"Other areas held by the 11th Infantry Regiment and 1st Infantry Regiment can also be similarly used."

I suppose we will get power cuts in Udon, and no telephone and internet service when Typoon Gaemi hits.
Here in Nong Bua there is always a brownout when there is thunder and lightning.
One bonus is Turd Moat that runs along part of the ring road will smell sweeter when it gets a good soaking.
I had to laugh there is a row of shophouses going up on banks of Turd Moat to the left of the red and yellow brigde that give access to Romyen and Lake Garden.

We lost power three times today, with the storm that hit on the other side of Udon. I got the torches ready. Part of living here and farmers need rain. I just hope it's not to late for the rice crop. The next to our farm looks healthy enough.

It is looking like the models predict it going south of us, but Bangkok may be in for a pretty good soaking. The models predict that it will stay close to Bangkok for 24 hours or so.

Rainfall predictions are very unreliable here, as unless frontal rain, thunder showers are localised - therefore we got a shower on wednesday, Udon didn't, and vice versa Thursday. The rainfall for Udon is i believe what they measure at the airport - so unless you live close, not much help! At least the cloudiness predictions are better. We have had a nice little shower this afternoon.

I've seen these severe weather warnings for Udon Thani before. They end up being nothing more than a damp squid.
I've played cricket matches in worse weather.

That's right they never do much, weather travels in an easterly direction, a cyclone over water will travel westerly, once it hits land it weakens into a rain depression then heads back in an easterly direction, so once they hit the Vietnam coast they turn back to the east, Thailand might get a little rain from the tail but normally not.

Warning: Heavy rains in provinces
Published: 6/10/2012 at 09:02 PM
Online news:
The Meteorological Department on Saturday night issued a warning for people in all regions but the North to prepare for widespread scattered rain with heavy falls in some areas over the next few days.
Deputy director-general Somchai Baimuang said tropical storm Gaemi, now over Vietnam, would pass through Cambodia and Thailand toward the Andaman Sea.
It will trigger heavy downpours in Buri Ram, Surin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchabun, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Nayok, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Singburi, Angthong, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Bangkok and nearby provinces on Sunday and Monday, he said.
The storm could also cause heavy rain in the southern provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong and Phang Nga, Mr Somchai said.
